Deutsch: Die Untersuchung von Sedimentgesteinen und der darin enthaltenen Fossilien wird als Biostratigraphie bezeichnet. Der Fossilinhalt kann zur Altersbestimmung von Gesteinsschichten herangezogen werden. Die Fotos von Fossilien einzelliger Algen in dieser Abbildung wurden mit einem Rasterelektronenmikroskop bei 250-facher Vergrößerung aufgenommen. Im US-Bundesstaat South Carolina wurden drei Arten fossiler Algen in einem Gesteinsbohrkern gefunden, in Virginia hingegen nur zwei. Aus der Abwesenheit der einen Art ergibt sich ein Fehlen der entsprechenden Gesteinsschicht aus dem frühen Mitteleozän. Mit den übrigen Arten ist die Korrelation der gleichaltrigen Gesteinsschichten (aus dem Untereozän und dem späten Mitteleozän) in beiden Bundesstaaten möglich. Ursprüngliche Abbildung verändert.
English: The study of layered rocks and the fossils they contain is called biostratigraphy. Fossils can be used to recognize rock layers of the same or different ages. The pictures of the fossils of monocellular algae in this figure were taken with a scanning electron microscope and have been magnified 250 times. In the U.S. state of South Caroline three species of fossil algae are found in a core of rock whereas in Virginia only two species are found. The missing of one species shows that the rock record from the early part of the middle Eocene is missing there. With the remaining species it is possible to correlate rock layers of the same age (early Eocene and latter part of the middle Eocene) in both South Carolina and Virginia. Original figure altered. |
