Object history Roundel by Bernardo Strozzi, commissioned in 1635 by the Procurators of Saint Mark de supra for the ceiling of the Reading Room of the Biblioteca Marciana in substitution of the damaged roundel by Giulio Licinio.[2] All of the roundels (21) were removed by the Austrians at the end of the second period of Austrian occupation (1815–1866) and transported to Vienna. The roundels were restituted as per the Treaty of Vienna of 3 October 1866 between Italy and Austria.
Notes
  1. Broderick, noting that the allegorical figure holds the attributes typically associated with Measure (compass and ruler) and not Sculpture (hammer and chisel), considers the allegory to visually present Plotinus' Discourse on Beauty (Enneads, I,6,9)
  2. The deliberation of the procurators de supra (Archives, PS, Serie Chiesa, Decreti e terminazioni, v. 35, c. 85, 1634, 12 aprile) states the intention to copy the damaged roundel. Nevertheless, when interpreted as an Allegory of Sculpture, the roundel is generally considered to differ from the original theme. (see Hope, p. 290)
