Description
Français : « Le Devisement du Monde », plus connu sous le nom de « Livre des Merveilles », est le plus célèbre récit de voyage du Moyen Âge. Le texte relate l'expérience personnelle de Marco Polo, enrichie de mythes et légendes, dans une œuvre qui est à la fois un guide de voyage et un moyen d'émerveillement. Avec un peu d'histoire mongole, Marco Polo décrit le monde qu'il a vu ou connu par ouï-dire en Asie centrale, Asie du Sud-Est, Chine, et dans l'océan Indien. Après un périple de 24 ans, c'est en prison à Gênes, en 1299, que Marco Polo dicte son récit à l'écrivain Rusticien de Pise, son compagnon de cellule. Somptueusement illustré de 265 peintures, cet exemplaire est le plus prestigieux des 143 manuscrits connus. Véritable encyclopédie géographique, il réunit en un seul volume l'essentiel des connaissances dont on disposait à la fin du XIVe siècle sur ces contrées lointaines, ajoutant sept autres textes à celui de Marco Polo.
