Title
Awl
Description
English: A probable copper-alloy atypical tracer/awl, 51mm in length, and 5mm thick. It is complete although both ends are very worn, one is presumably a former break which was rounded by use-wear.

From an approximately square cross-section at its former mid-point(?) both ends of this awl are twisted, in opposite directions, to give them lozenge shaped cross-sections. This can only have resulted from extreme use-wear and is important for this reason and as this can also suggest that this awl was not used for leather or material working but more likely for metal, stone or wood working. The surviving tip is extremely worn giving a very broad, and not very sharp, although still relatively pointed end. The lozenge shaped cross-section just above the start of the tip is slightly flattened on each corner creating a perhaps more octagonal cross-section at this point. The surface is in good condition and has a deep brown patina.

This unusual awl is most likely to be Bronze Age in date.
