Description

Least-square reductions of observations taken, at equal intervals, of the independent variable that follow approximately a parabolic or linear law frequently occur in physics and engineering practice. Makeshift devices are often employed to avoid the arithmetical work of determining the constants of curves which properly represent such data. In this paper the ordinary least-square formulæ are subjected to mathematical treatment, and rigorous solutions are evolved which require an ultimate minimum of arithmetical work. A table is given from which a large portion of the solutions can be written down from a mere inspection of the observations. Application of the solutions is made to typical problems, and an absolute check with%2
