Description |
English: A Navigator with Globe and Dividers A full-length portrait of a gentleman. Facing viewer's left he wears a brown doublet and a black cloak slung over his left shoulder, with a lace ruff and lace cuffs. He has black breeches, green stockings, and ornate beribboned shoes. He wears a brown glove on his left hand with a ring on the little finger and in it he also holds the glove of his right hand. His left hand rests on his hip. On the left is a table bearing a carefully delineated celestial globe. The points of a pair of dividers held in the sitter's right hand rest over the globe. Beyond, through an open window, a ship is shown to indicate his navigational pursuits. A large rolled up chart lies on the floor to the right. The architectural features suggest a panelled room with wooden columns, together with a chequered tiled floor. The artist's name is unclear but the painting bears a signature on the wooden panelling and an inscription 'Aetatis 23/Anno 1624'. |
