Criada em 1959, a Agência das Nações Unidas de Assistência aos Refugiados da Palestina, (UNRWA), oferece assistência e proteção a 5,9 milhões de refugiados palestinos registrados. Os serviços da agência abrangem educação, assistência médica, serviços sociais e de assistência, infraestrutura e melhoria dos campos de refugiados, microfinanciamento e assistência emergencial, inclusive em tempos de conflito armado.
