Description

330-PSA-243-63 (USN 711381): Rescued from a mountain. A distressed Haitian is lifted to a helicopter from Anti-Submarine Squadron 11, after being stranded on a mountain-side after

Hurricane Flora hit the island. The squadron was commanded by Commander John A. Seargeant, USN, and it continued to fly relief and rescue operations on the devastated island since Hurricane Flora swept over it, leaving at least 1000 dead and hundreds homeless. An estimated 85 percent of Petit Thou de Nippes was destroyed by the storm. Helicopters from USS Lake Champlain and USS Thetis Bay flew some 271 sorties, evacuating an estimated 347 persons and air-lifting some 330,105 pounds of relief supplies.
