Summary

[edit]
Description

English: Copper(II) oxide does not react with water. Therefore, it is not an anhydride of a base. Still, CuO reacts with acids, but not with bases. This means the basic properties of this oxide prevail (it is not amphoteric oxide too). The experiment shows the reaction of copper(II) oxide with diluted sulfuric acid giving copper(II) sulfate solution. A proof for the latter is the blue color of the solution. It is the color of hydrated copper(II) ions. The reaction equation is:

CuO(s) + H2SO4(aq) = CuSO4(aq) + H2O(l)

Planned and performed by Marina Stojanovska, Miha Bukleski and Vladimir Petruševski, Department of Chemistry, FNSM, Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, Skopje, Macedonia.
