Description2 Squadron RAAF Hudson fitters Hughes NT Mar 1943 AWM NWA0172.jpg |
English: AWM caption : Australia: Northern Territory, Hughes Airstrip (NT). A swarm of aircraft fitters of No. 2 Squadron RAAF perform a 60-hourly inspection on one of the Squadron's Lockheed Hudsons, A16-244 (contractor's no 6497). On 4 November 1943, this Hudson, crewed by Flying Officer (FO) Reed, FO Allen and FO Carvosso and Flight Sergeant (Flt Sgt) Woof and Crow, had completed a mission escorting No. 457 Squadron RAAF Spitfire aircraft to Drysdale strip, when, upon landing, one of its tyres blew, causing the plane to ground loop. While the crew were uninjured, the damage caused to the Hudson's undercarriage, wheels and propellor was extensive. The following day, Hudson A16-199, carrying 2 Squadron's Engineering Officer, flew from Hughes to Drysdale 'to remove A16-244 from runway', while RAAF records state that the fuselage was subsequently abandoned. |
