English: A 1913 proposal to build tunnels rather than bridges to allow crossing the Lake Washington Ship Canal, Seattle, Washington, then under construction. His main concern appears to have been moving streetcars/cable cars and pedestrians, rather than automobiles; also that a tunnel would be a good route for utility lines (electric, water, etc.). This was engineer J.W. Johnston's proposal to the Seattle City Council. It went nowhere, and Seattle got bridges for transport and separate tunnels and overhead lines for utilities, which still stand as of 2024. In the 2010s, a rail line finally was bored to carry Link Light Rail under the Montlake Cut of the Ship Canal. |
