Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Engraving from the book Harmonic Cabinet by Filippo Bonanni; illustrates text on page 174 showing a Marimba de Cafri.

Image illustrates text on page 174 (roughly translated by Google):

Marimba of Cafti. We report here: used by those of Cafreria, which is part of the Kingdom of Monomotapa, 15 degrees from the Antarctic Pole. The first is a strong Marimba, although not entirely different from the one shown in number 121, page 154. It is thus described by a Father of the Society of Jesus, who was more mature in that Cofta, and heard played many times in Goa by those Catechumens Catri in the folklore of some Saint. It is incredible the skill with which these People, represented in the natural figure proposed in their dances, use it. They form a small cafè of light wood, 3 fingers high, about a span and a half long with the rod in the middle. At the head of this is the Bridge composed of two pieces, which are joined together at the corner: this was then, so that you could easily move it, fixed 700 iron plates, which, ending in the same line towards the player's hand, widen at their extremity into many little tongues, and by pressing these with the thumbs of both hands they come with the rest to make a pleasing sound.
