Notes Part of the Charles Ramsden Collection of Signed Bindings. Macchi states; second quarter century, Paris, bound by Lebrun. A very competent but dull binder. Apprentice and for a long Simier's craftsman, he probably started about 1830 and was at rue de Grenelle-Saint-Germain 126 (1839). He was favourably mentioned in the 1839 Exhibition, received a Bronze Medal in 1844 and specialised in backs "à la grotesque" (S. de Ricci, French signed bindings, III, 326). He appears in the 1840-1849 Almanachs at Grenelle 126, and was still working in 1851. His decorations are quite different: à la Bauzonnet fillets border, retrospective style, mosaic, strapwork (H. Béraldi, La reliure, II, p. 50, 62, 65, 77, 98-99, 155; Bibliotheca Wittockiana, Relieurs et reliures, 1995, p. 522-523; J. Fléty, Dictionnaire, p. 107, C. Ramsden, French bookbinders, p. 122).
