As evidenced by genetic studies, the homeland of the honey bee is Africa. But together with man, it spread around the world.
Honey bees are eusocial insects, because they live in collectives - colony and they are characterized by polymorphism — that is, existence in the form of three individuals that differ in structure and the functions they perform. The division of functions between queen and worker bees increases the productivity of bees due to the specialization of certain organs in females, such as ovaries, proboscis, sacs, wax glands. The bee colony is characterized by high fertility. During the year, 150,000 to 200,000 eggs develop from the eggs laid by the uterus. individuals (mainly worker bees).
A bee colony is a complete biological unit, superorganism, which consists of worker bees and a queen, between which there is a close relationship. An individual is incapable of living alone without a colony. The colony consists of females. Temporarily, during several months of the spring-summer period, it is inhabited by drones — males hatched to mate with young queens.
Bee colonies reproduce swarming. As a result, two or more colonies are formed from one. When the number of worker bees becomes such that all of them do not have enough substances secreted by the queen, the process of swarming starts. Bees build queen cells, and when the larvae turn into pupae, the old queen flies away, taking with her about 60% of the worker bees. The swarm sits in an intermediate place, usually on a tree branch. Scouts fly around the neighborhood and look for a permanent place of residence. After mutual checks and reaching a consensus, which sometimes takes a couple of days, the entire swarm is resettled. Meanwhile, young queens are hatched in the hive. One of them kills all competitors and mates with a drone. She will fly out next year. In the wild, in the presence of honey and the absence of mass diseases, the queen moves to a new place every year, leaving behind colonies.
