Description |
English: 'John Russel. The First Earl of Bedford 1549' Half-lenght portrait of John Russel, first Earl of Bedford, by Jacobus Houbraken. The sitter is depicted within a baroque cartouche wearing the insignia of the order of the Garter. Below, a putti is holding a laurel wreath, a battle is depicted on a plinth, and an anchor is placed on the left-hand side. Jacobus Houbraken was one of the most accomplished portrait engravers of the eighteenth century. This print was included in the "Heads of Illustrious Persons of Great Britain", his most famous engravings for English publication, done in collaboration with the antiquary and engraver George Vertue and published by Knapton between 1743 and 1752. |
