| Description |
English: This is a wooden sign placed next to the Wordie House on Winter Island, Antarctica proclaiming British annexation in the mid-20th century. This sign and the Wordie House structure were built in 1947, named after a member of one of the Shackleton expeditions.
The Wordie House structure was made of material from Port Lockroy and whaling structures at Deception Island. In 1954, Wordie House was replaced with a new science base on nearby Galindez Island, called Faraday (today called Vernadsky and operated by Ukraine). The Wordie House was occupied briefly by necessity in 1960 when an expedition could not reach its intended destination and had to shelter in Wordie. Apart from the occasional tourist, that was the last time the spot was used. All of the original stuff of life and science equipment are all still there, making Wordie House a time capsule. |
