Frequently Asked Questions
[edit]- Due to the spread of COVID-19, I have limited access to natural heritage sites to take pictures for the contest, what to do?
- We highly encourage you to upload your existing pictures. Please, stay safe and healthy by following the restrictions imposed in the country. The global spread of COVID-19 pandemic has some impact on the activities related to Wiki Loves Earth 2020, we are preparing a dedicated section on this.
- Is there a limit on the number of photos I can submit?
- No, you can submit as many as you like. Some people are uploading photos of hundreds of sites. However, we recommend you upload your best and quality photographs to increase your chances of winning.
- Can I use Photoshop or a similar program to post-process my photos before submitting them?
- Yes. The photos can be edited or processed by using any software. But please avoid the temptation to over-process: this is a photographic contest, not a computer art one.
- What are the guidelines on image size?
- Please submit images that are as large as possible and do not “downsize for the web”. We value high-resolution images for many purposes including print. While images below 2 megapixels may be accepted for the national contest, they will not be considered for a prize as they lack usability at larger sizes, especially in print. Please note we won't contact you and ask you to submit larger resolution photos. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Douglaseru (talk • contribs) 23:17, 30 April 2020 (UTC)

Discussion summary
- User contributions, and tools
Wikiscan to track contributions and user statistics on Wikimedia commons, and other Wikimedia projects. Toolsforge for tracking Wiki Loves (x) contributions The Jury uses the Montage tool, and WLX Jury tools An invitation was shared about the upcoming training by the WLE international team on the usage of the WLX jury tool.
- Voice/data reimbursements
A sample screenshot will be shared to show data loaded, that can be reimbursed. The next reimbursements will be shared directly as data on people’s mobile phones or devices, so that they are not required to provide receipts.
- The Jury image selection process
National organisers request for access to the Jury tool, where they can set up competition campaigns, settings, image selection criteria, and adding jurors The montage tool used has three rounds: Yes/No (100+ images per juror), Rating (60+ images per juror), and Ranking (30+ images per juror), variations depending on the total number of images. Preliminary and final results are prepared with another method, and weighing platform, for example using spreadsheets.
- Preliminary results
After results from the 3 rounds in the montage tool, a new jury member was brought on board.
Local plus international rules, and criteria were considered, all the images were good, but the greatest challenge was of photos not being geotagged.
Preliminary results and the top 9 images were shared, one of the images was yet to be added to make a total of 10 images that will be submitted to the international competition.
Winners were still being contacted, confirmed, and other technical checks being done on the selected images, final results to be announced at the closing meeting.

Members are getting photographers’ contacts At the moment there are 311 images, 200 of which are in line with the theme. 110 images are not categorized. Some participants needed a letter, or a COVID-19 certificate to permit them to visit some of the sites. Parks which still have primates are still closed. Other members have uploaded images from trips they took in National parks and game reserves in Western Uganda.
- Any open reserves that can be visited before competition closure
A reminder about categorising images and the competition closure was shared. No letters will be required as reserves and offices are closed.

A dashboard for tracking user contributions was shared as one of the monitoring tools for Wikimedia projects, users also were reminded to enable email preferences, and ensure that they upload their own photos.
- Submission of receipts for reimbursements
All participants were reminded to provide receipts for reimbursement of their expenses, some participants prefered to receive data directly to avoid collecting physical receipts.

Discussion summary
- Upload progress
Images uploaded were 277 so far, which is good enough since members were working under lockdown, however, emphasis is put on images that are in line with nature, the created lists of places, and other aspects of the theme.
- List of places to visit
Lists of places had already been shared in the photo hunt schedule, but places like the Entebbe Wildlife center, are still under lockdown. A group online mass upload was proposed, if members are provided with data.
- Updated competition rules
All participants were reminded to upload their own photos, or ask photographers to upload images in the remaining 9 days of the competition, but the challenge was on public transport which was restricted from accessing specific places due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

- Extension of the upload period
To accommodate most of the members’ preferences, and after guidance from the WLE international team on lists of places, the upload period was extended for 3 weeks from 23 May up to 13 June 2020.
- Selection of sites and regions to upload photos
The Photo hunt schedule/sheet was updated, with members suggesting to contact photographers from: Mukono, the Eastern Region, Nakasongola, Tororo, Jinja, Entebbe, Kigumba, Mweya safari Lodge, and Gaba

- Upload progress
WLE 2020 in Uganda had 86 photos. Some members have uploaded, others have collected images, and are getting in touch with photographers People can share images on email, google drive, or flickr then these can be uploaded on commons. Members need to take a look at the eligibility criteria for quality photos, and kinds of images to upload.
- Photographers and (new) volunteer participants
Photographers in Tororo and Mbale were required some facilitation with photo upload costs, and written permission to restricted sites might be needed. Some of the photographers expressed interest to participate in the competition after the lockdown was eased. Participants from the Western region, some of whom had taken part in WIki Loves Monuments, were also contacted to participate.
- Activities for week 2 (16 -23 May), receipts and reimbursements
Dates for activities are 16 - 19 May and 20 - 23 May 2020. An online group upload session can be planned A monthly data/voice bundle was the preferred option by most of the members, who can later provide receipts or get reimbursed for data/voice costs incurred.

Discussion summary
- Walk-through of the upload process — Preceding unsigned comment added by Douglaseru (talk • contribs) 20:25, 7 August 2020 (UTC)
The landing page has all the steps, and instructions on how to upload images. The upload wizard, central notice were all fixed by Romaine There were 19 photos uploaded as at 12 May 2020, images from areas that were covered last year e.g Queen Elizabeth, Murchison falls, e.t.c can as well be uploaded if they are different from the . One of the participants shared a demo video about the upload process using a mobile phone.
- Engage with photographers and (other) volunteer participants
Photo uploads will be mainly done individually and online, with an approach of engaging photographers for quality photos;
- To participate as uploaders, and volunteer members, borrow equipment like cameras, and can also be potential jury members
- We need to involve other volunteers to join the competition for example previous participants in photographic competitions (WLA, WLE, WLM), and those who signed up through the registration form, and will be updated at the Participants’ (Team members’) page.
- Activities for the upcoming weeks
Due to the ban on offline public events, there will be mainly online events and meetings.
- Review timelines
The local timeline has been proposed for the competition to end on 6 June 2020. Photo upload period is 9 - 23 May, Jury and selection of winners 25 May - 1 June Closure and award of prizes 2 - 6 June, Final reporting and meta updates 6 - 8 June
- This has been done to ensure that volunteers can free up their time to learn, get skills, understand the movement, participate in other Wikimedia projects or their own activities.
- The international tentative timeline is as below
May 1 – July 31: national competitions. See specific timeline for each country. End of August: deadline for submissions, e.g. to the Winners page October-November: deadline for the international results
- The 10 winning images from Uganda will be sent by the end of July for the international competition, local prizes will be provided to the top images as stipulated on the landing page.
- Project logistics and reimbursements
The Usergroup activities are volunteer based, there are no salaries for the members, and participants. Members have used their own resources for several activities. Projects only have a few volunteer expenses that can be covered such as transport, refreshments, and voice/data on offline events
- There will be reimbursements for expenses incurred on voice/data for this project since most/all of the activities will be done online.
Snacks, refreshments, and transport refunds may also be considered when individuals spend on these during justifiable situations. Individuals are requested to provide receipts so that their reasonable expenses can be reimbursed.
