User alert

[edit]

If you are going to do a user alert, it should include customizable text per site explaining why that site is problematic. E.g. "Facebook's default license is not a free license, so it cannot be used for Commons" or "Images found on Google are almost always just copies from elsewhere. We need the actual source where Google got the image; Google is typically a pass-through, not a source." - Jmabel ! talk 07:47, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

The sentence "Wikimedia Commons does not host media protected by copyright" is also totally wrong. Most content on Commons is still copyrighted. GPSLeo (talk) 08:59, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Should be something like "Media protected by copyright can be hosted on Commons only if the copyright-holder has granted a free license that allows both commercial re-use and derivative work (no 'NC' or 'ND' licenses; no unlicensed copyrighted work)." I'd love to see it shorter, but I don't see what to leave out. - Jmabel ! talk 11:30, 18 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jmabel @GPSLeo Thanks for the feedback (and sorry for the late reply). Right now, we are focusing on the main part of the project and we don't have an immediate plan to go on with the UI warning. If that's something that the community would like to see implemented, we'll consider your ideas if we move forward with this. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 10:14, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Success metrics

[edit]

Do you have a plan in mind for how you're going to measure the effectiveness of these messages? In particular, how do you plan to distinguish between the message dissuading users from uploading non-free media from problematic sites, and the message discouraging users from disclosing where they obtained images? Omphalographer (talk) 05:08, 19 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Omphalographer Thanks for your questions. Right now, we don't have immediate plans to go on with the UI warning, nor do we have ways to differentiate between the two cases you're referring to. We are open to suggestions on this point, and we are interested in finding a consensual solution with the community on this. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 10:14, 25 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

operator (P137)

[edit]

This is completely wrong. The correct qualifier to use is content deliverer (P3274). P137 was never supposed to be used for social media sites, let alone Facebook profiles of all things! Trade (talk) 15:26, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Trade Thanks for your intervention. I'll flag it to the devs, and see if we can change the property. Sannita (WMF) (talk) 15:32, 9 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Trade "operator (P137)" is used in this way widely already - here's a search for images with "source of file (P7482)" = "file available on the internet (Q74228490)" and qualifier "operator (P137)" = "flickr (Q103204)". As you can see there are 13k results, all added before we made this change
Obvs we can change the property, but the way we're doing it seems like a well-established convention CParle (WMF) (talk) 11:23, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Request for website addition

[edit]

Is there any chance you could include "https://www.fandom.com/" and "https://static.wikia.nocookie.net/" to the list of "blacklisted" websites? Excluding urls that contain the word "Logopedia" and "Logo" (most of the Logopedia images are PD-simple trademarks) Trade (talk) 23:57, 10 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Created a patch to add fandom/wikia (see here)
Excluding stuff means adding complexity which we'd rather avoid at this stage ... we're not actually blacklisting anything, just adding structured data to make stuff that's likely to be copyrighted easier to find. CParle (WMF) (talk) 11:42, 11 November 2024 (UTC)[reply]
