Commons talk:Structured data/Modeling/Competitions
Currently the recommendation for capturing that an image took part of e.g. WLM is to use a new property Wikimedia campaign/project (to be created). I think its worth making a distinction between images created as part of a wikimedia project (e.g. a photowalk) amd images participating in a (albeit wiki) competition (WLM/POTY). In the latter case the creation of the image need have nothing to do with the competition/campaign. For competitions there is already participant in (P1344) and a qualifier (ranking (P1352) or award received (P166)) on the value could then be used to indicate how the file did (finalist, top 10, winner etc.) . So e.g. Mahasu Devta, Hanol. Uttarakhand.jpg would have participant in (P1344):Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in India (Q56404102)->award received (P166):winner (Q18560095). /Lokal_Profil 17:47, 19 August 2019 (UTC)

- @Lokal Profil and Jean-Frédéric: playing around a bit with this for the upcoming Wiki Loves Monuments. Used File:"Mighty Mac" Mackinac Bridge at night.jpg for testing.
- I like the suggestion of using participant in (P1344) and I used it. I used Wiki Loves Monuments 2017 (Q30015204) for two reasons:
- I don't want to be forced to create an item for every WLM in country in year competition
- An upload actually participates in the local and the main competition.
- Now I was wondering how to best indicate the country just like the country code in the template:
- Qualifier country (P17) to participant in (P1344)?
- Qualifier country of origin (P495) to participant in (P1344)?
- country of origin (P495) directly on the item?
- Or maybe some other way? The first way seems to be cleanest. Input please. Multichill (talk) 10:12, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- Option 1 seems the best to me. It would also potentially allow for images participating in more than one local competition (eg South Tyrol, Catalonia, Basque country…) Jean-Fred (talk) 13:51, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- I let this sink in a bit after I wrote it and I realized we're adding or at least should be adding location of creation (P1071) to every file. The target of location of creation (P1071) should always have a country (P17) statement so we can just use that. Multichill (talk) 14:06, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- True, but there may not be a one-one mapping. A picture taken in say, Wales, might be part of WLM UK but not WLM Wales ; but a picture taken in Catalonia might run in both a WLM Catalonia and WLM Spain. No? Jean-Fred (talk) 14:49, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- Yes, I doubt we can do this with qualifiers with qualifiers without upsetting people. The Catatalonia example is nice in this case: It's part of WLM, WLM Catalonia and WLM Spain. I'm just adding the first one. For a lot of countries (Austria, France, Netherlands, etc.) this is implicit the country. For the special cases they can just add another participant of statement. - I have a few worries with using just Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 (Q56165596) rather than e.g. Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in India (Q56404102).
- The first how do we, using qualifiers, distinguish between the image being a finalist in the local competition rather than the international one?
- The second is that the local competition might actually not be fully overlapping with the international one. I.e. the local rules can allow images which do not qualify in the international competition, as long as these are not submitted to the international jury.
- Historically the same image has participated in two national competitions (Falkland island image I believe). This would be super easy to clarify with Wiki Loves Monuments 2018 in India (Q56404102) statements, but a minefield if we are relying on country (P17)/country of origin (P495).
- Considering there aren't that many national competitions I believe the benefit of creating those items outweighs any potential for clutter. /Lokal_Profil 07:32, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
- I'm just adding the statement for the international part. Local organizers can add an item for the local part if they like. Multichill (talk) 16:32, 31 August 2020 (UTC)
