Selection step

[edit]

Hello, I remember, when I did the Multilingual captions prototype testing, that I had a little worry about the new language selection step. I mean I have no problem that when you click on "Add a caption" you have English that is selected, I even can understand that very well in the extend that the English is widely use. However the issue is when you have already a caption in English, you click again on "add a caption", and.... you have now a new caption in English, then you have to click (it is now the 2nd click) on the selector language to have the possibility to access the list of language choices. This is boring to have to click two times. My suggestion is, whether in the case to add captions in an existing file or in the upload wizard, to open directly the list of language choices when a first caption have been already created and that you click on "add a caption". One click saved every time we add a new caption will ultimately be several million clicks saved for the Wikimedia Commons editors. That's said the rest seems ok. yes, you could open caption in language per the meta language user box (as at wikidata labels). Slowking4 § Sander.v.Ginkel's revenge 23:16, 24 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Syncing with captions stored on Wikidata

[edit]

For images of notable artworks (e.g. d:Q1245354), and for images used on Wikidata (for example, File:Birmingham Airport departure - 2018-05-08 - Andy Mabbett - 04.jpg on d:Q53997766), how can this be synced with descriptions, d:Property:P1705 ("native label"), d:Property:P1476 ("title"), and/or d:Property:P2096 ("media legend")? Aware this is not stricly speaking a visual design question, but will these captions be CC0, like all values in Wikidata, or CC-BY-SA, as I belivea the descriptive metadata in Commons currently is? Hoping for the first! --DivadH (talk) 09:13, 26 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Questions

[edit]

Bonjour, plusieurs questions :

Merci. Ayack (talk) 07:50, 29 May 2018 (UTC)

  • Bonjour, I hope I may reply in English.
  • Will captions be able to be displayed on on other wikis, such as Wikipedia or Wikidata for example?
I'll see if I can get a definite answer as to what the plans are here.
  • Will it be possible to insert internal/external links?
No.
  • Will it be possible to format the caption text?
No.
  • Why is "caption" repeated many times in the in the mockups?
I think you mean a file such as File:Example_flow_adding_an_initial_caption.png. As you can see if you look at the file page, the .png has a transparent background so what you are seeing is actually three separate steps in adding a caption; the word "caption" is not actually repeated several times on one page. This is unclear in the mockup and that is my fault, I told PDrouin (WMF) to use the transparent background. Sorry about that.
  • What will be the list of languages available?
As far as I know, all that have captions available. I'll make sure this is correct.

How to use the captions

[edit]

Hello. I did not read every word in help pages and discussions, but I checked a lot and still can't find an answer for the main question: how can one use it? I can see how to add, edit, remove caption, how to read it on the Commons file page, but nothing about usage. Is there wikicode magic word as #property or #statement for Wikidata? Something else? How can I write in templates a call to retrieve the caption text so i could display it in infoboxes? Thank you. IKhitron (talk) 13:11, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
