Things that need to be mentioned
[edit]- Some info on some new good audio + video
- DjVU? / get someone from Wikisource to write something, maybe
UM, some clues there as to what you're on about? any of this have links? ++Lar: t/c 21:22, 14 November 2006 (UTC)
- DJVu is a file format that is especially useful for book scans. See eg Image:Concessions in USSR 1928.djvu. I wrote a message on wikisource-l, hopefully someone will come and talk it up, because I don't know a lot about it. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
Some info on growth rate would be good -- after all, we celebrated 100K just relatively recently (May 2005).--Eloquence 05:37, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- Tim told me that in the last week we had 2061 net new files (uploads-deletions). I'm going to assume that was an average week and not particularly high or low. Someone with some kind of DB access could figure out more accurate rates. If someone gives me some monthly figures I will whip up an EasyTimeline... :) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 08:15, 15 November 2006 (UTC)
- That seems like an awfully low number and would average to only 100,000 new files per year. I suspect that intermittent bot runs cause growth in spurts. I suggest asking Gregory Maxwell to do some more growth analysis.--Eloquence 05:56, 17 November 2006 (UTC)
Hmmm, a press release must stay short and focused. Paragraphes such as "Audio" should probably not be there or summarized to one sentence/ This is too long guys/. Anthere
- OK. I put the excised section here so I feel that I didn't waste a lot of time writing it. :) Maybe Animation should be excised too then. See, writing a paper press release for a media database, it's a hard thing to do. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:35, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
Audio
[edit]All sound files at the Commons are encoded in either the Ogg file format or MIDI file format. Please see Commons:Media help for advice on what software is required to play these types of file. Alternatively, click "play in browser" for the Ogg examples below. Playing in browser requires Java.
Commons hosts several principle types of audio files - song/music, human speech, animal sounds and synthetic sounds. The first two have the greatest amount of content to date.
Human speech
[edit]The most comprehensive coverage at the moment is of human speech. This covers short pronunciation files (typically of words of phrases), recorded speeches (both present-day and historical), and recorded versions of written text. Recorded versions of written text includes Wikipedia articles (currently in eleven languages: Alemannisch, Catalan, Chinese, Dutch, English, French, German, Hungarian, Polish, Portuguese and Spanish) and books whose copyright has expired.
Category:English pronunciation contains over 4,400 files of native British English and American English speakers pronouncing words and phrases. These files are vital in Wiktionary, and can also be used by students of English for study of regional variation in pronuncation and minimal pairs.
Stress differences:
Minimal pair:
Recordings of tongue twisters are also available in over eleven different languages.
Spoken Wikipedia articles/sound files can be found at http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Spoken_Wikipedia .
Translations
[edit]Should this page need translations? -- Bryan (talk to me) 12:00, 18 November 2006 (UTC)
- Probably. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 05:04, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
The point of animation?
[edit]What is the point of including animations? -- Zanimum 15:52, 27 November 2006 (UTC)
- They're cool? About as much point as including a thumbnail of a gorgeous hi-res photograph or diagram. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 05:00, 28 November 2006 (UTC)
Too long
[edit]Like most press releases, we've worked on, it's too long. In particular, I think we should drop much of the featured pictures section, maybe pick one example from each category? Opportunities to condense the text would be wonderful as well.
Also, we should clean up the contact information (Florence is chair now, not Jimmy). And having some Commons-specific press contacts, instead of just the generic group, would be nice. Do we have suitable people willing to have their contact information published with this? --Michael Snow 01:11, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Well, if you get people with no experience to write press releases, that's what happens. Of course trim it however you or anyone else sees fit.
- As for press contacts, what's involved? just an email address? I'm happy to volunteer for English, although I live in Australia... which for email probably doesn't matter. I'll contact User:EugeneZelenko (be/ru), User:Fred Chess (sv), User:Lmbuga (es/gl) and User:Shizhao (zh) as I feel they would make good contacts. Volunteers for French and German and other languages might be nice too. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 12:26, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- I may not be the best choice but am willing to be a contact as well if needful. Bastique may be another good en choice. ++Lar: t/c 13:16, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- I'll volunteer. If you like, I'll look at your PR, too. I've got an MBA in marketing, 1,500+ Commons edits, and contributed over 100 original images. Who do I contact? Rklawton 14:00, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Same as Lar :-) I think Panther (AFAIK he participated in similar interview) and Kneiphof will be good ru choice. --EugeneZelenko 15:56, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
- Yes, I've answered a couple of questions in april. There are no my objections to give any contacts, but my English is not so good to make a discussion in the real time :). --Panther 09:03, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- No problems with contacts (exposed at my user page) and with dedication. My spoken English is still quite far from fluent, however. Dr Bug (Vladimir V. Medeyko) 01:19, 1 December 2006 (UTC)
- I'd say replace the "Regional contacts" section at the bottom with "Language contacts", and add your name and email address there (phone if you're willing). I don't know all of you, but I would certainly trust pfctdayelise's judgment about who is good. --Michael Snow 15:18, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
WM.FR press release
[edit]At m:Wikimédia France/Communique sur le million de Commons. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 13:30, 29 November 2006 (UTC)
is this correct?
[edit]"Every week over two thousand new files are uploaded." - So we have in one year (55 weeks) only 110.000 files. Shouldn't it be: "Every day...?" Kolossos 17:27, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
- 100,000th upload - TBR May 23, 2005
- 1,000,000th upload - November 30, 2006
- There is a gap of about 900 days, so there were 1000 files per day, so I guess you are right. --Nux (talk··dyskusja) 20:50, 30 November 2006 (UTC)
