[edit]Shouldn't this image be classified in the arthropods rather than the plants category? Gidip (talk) 17:42, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, arthropods is the right classification :-) -- Odisha1 (talk) 19:04, 17 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Gidip (talk) 11:38, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
Start date?
[edit]There reads that "Round 1 begins on 17. tammikuuta 2015". However even the "Visit Round 1 gallery to vote »" link goes to a page that doesn't exist. So has it started or do I miss something (it's already over midnight here)? --Stryn (talk) 22:50, 17 January 2015 (UTC)

Hi, this image is in a wrong gallery (people). -- ChristianFerrer 09:21, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
- File usage is still wrong but it should be fixed. Thanks for spotting that. -- Rillke(q?) 10:32, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
Also in the wrong gallery. Gidip (talk) 11:52, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
- Placed in right gallery. -- Odisha1 (talk) 12:39, 18 January 2015 (UTC)
This picture is not in the competition but should be. -- Colin (talk) 10:56, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- Please skim through Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2014/R1/Gallery/Cities_and_Bridges. I believe it's in there as it's also in Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2014/Candidates#Cities_and_Bridges. -- Rillke(q?) 11:56, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- Thanks Rillke. It wasn't the category I expected, and when I looked at the File Description page, I couldn't see the link to the category -- but I had to load the "full list" page for that to appear. -- Colin (talk) 12:02, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
Generic Picture of the Year
[edit]Some links end up on the generic (no year) POTY page, ending with 2013. I dare not touch anything while it's alive, but I think one of the existing 2014 headers/navboxes could offer links to the 2014 pages.
Unrelated, if the "table" view doesn't exist this year it can be removed from the navbar, otherwise it can be activated (wikilink instead of text, same idea as for the galleries activated four days ago.) –Be..anyone (talk) 13:01, 21 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Miya: Do we need the table view? -- Rillke(q?) 18:51, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- You mean "table" view can be generated automatically? Oh, pleaase - if it will not take much resource of you. Thank you! --miya (talk) 00:29, 24 January 2015 (UTC)
banner spam
[edit]why are you spamming banners at other projects? do you know about the guidelines about banners? where is the opt out? nothing could be better calculated to turn people off from participating than being an attention hog. i have participated in the past, never again. Slowking4 ♡ Farmbrough's revenge 14:19, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- It fits into other general Wikimedia votes. I have hidden banners completely using an adblocker and my user css so I don't see them. I also don't know how it currently looks like so if you have specific improvement suggestions, write them down here and I'll see what I can do at meta. -- Rillke(q?) 15:25, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

Category winners
[edit]I trust the category winners will be announced this year? That's kind of the entire point of having categories. (Source: I was one of the organizers the year we added categories) Adam Cuerden (talk) 18:48, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- Did we forget this last year? What kind of "announcement" do you expect in particular? -- Rillke(q?) 18:51, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- I couldn't find a mention of it anywhere last year. They're certainly never going to be the main announcement, but they should appear on the main results page, and be available to be discussed; when I tried to find it last year, it looked like the category winners were simply silently added into the Round 2 pool, without any note, which kind of removes the main goal of the categories, which was originally to recognize that Commons has a wide variety of content, and that all of it is valued, while still getting an ultimate winner. Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:04, 23 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Adam Cuerden: would you mind to prepare some kind of announcement? You might pick the category winners from our result page by first sorting by vote count and then by category. That'd be a great help! -- Rillke(q?) 09:05, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Paintings
[edit]On a separate subject, this category should be renamed "Paintings and other two-dimensional artworks", or otherwise clarified: Over a third of the images in it are not paintings. Further, File:Ordre de Mobilisation générale 2 août 1914.jpg should probably be in a completely different category entirely. ("Miscellaneous" is probably a better choice than putting it somewhere it doesn't fit at all.) Adam Cuerden (talk) 19:05, 23 January 2015 (UTC)

- The deletion request has been closed as deleted, thus the file does not exist anymore, thus we cannot show it for technical reasons. If you manage to get it restored, I am happy to include it again. -- Rillke(q?) 12:40, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- If you're talking about the undeletion request for the POTY candidate, that was archived after 103 minutes. The undeletion request for the deleted voting page is still open at the moment. Difficulty
[edit]Are you kidding us? So difficult way of voting "# Juandev" it cannot be done automatically, by JavaScript? I am deffinitely not going to be a part of such time eating activity. Its year 2015 and we still should use difficult wiki code?!--Juandev (talk) 18:42, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- Try the POTY gadget in your Preferences. Based on the edit history of some voting pages I guessed that the precise number of "noscript"-Testers is one (me). –Be..anyone (talk) 19:39, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Juandev: If you disable JavaScript or the POTY gadget (which is enabled by default), of course we advice you how to manually vote because we assume it's your intention to do so. -- Rillke(q?) 20:15, 25 January 2015 (UTC)
- @Juandev: In case you use the mobile interface, I asked for help but didn't yet received any response by the mobile team. From my e-Mail you can also deduce that there's some difficulty in implementing a mobile version involved. -- Rillke(q?) 18:16, 26 January 2015 (UTC)

I can't vote on image

- This is because you have not more than 75 edits in a single wiki that is attached to your account and therefore you are not eligible to vote in POTY 2014. Hope to see you next year :) -- Rillke(q?) 23:30, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
@Rillke: Out of curiosity, would it be possible to have a notice on the vote page that tells users if (or maybe why) they aren't eligible? Not a big deal really, I was also stumped buy the greyed out vote button and I'm guessing others have been too. Regards Nick.GV (talk) 00:55, 24 February 2015 (UTC)

- @Beria: Do you have an idea, how this is caused? -- Rillke(q?) 23:30, 27 January 2015 (UTC)
- No, the banner does not have any code who prevent it from being hide. I have no idea what is going on. Béria L. Rodríguez msg 17:54, 29 January 2015 (UTC)

Category 1 and 2?

Vote count malfunction
[edit]On the vote page for File:Wroclaw-Most Grunwaldzki.jpg, the vote count starts from 1 again after counting to voter number 97. This needs fixing I think, otherwise it's possible that those first 97 votes will be overlooked. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 23:48, 31 January 2015 (UTC)
- I will run a find & replace operation over all vote pages to restore votes affected by phab:T14974.
- We do not count these ordinal numbers; instead we evaluate each single diff of every edit ever done to any of the vote pages to verify no manipulation has taken place and we validate user eligibility while doing so.

R2?
[edit]Hi guys. According to the rules, round two starts today ("14 February 2015"). Yet there is no indication of this at any of the POTY pages except the one displaying the rules. All pages still appear to be in "R1 is over"-mode. Is there a reason for this delay? If yes, would you please adjust the rule page to reflect this? Thanks. --DXR (talk) 13:09, 14 February 2015 (UTC)

What is going on with round 2? Has something gone wrong?--Perfectamundo (talk) 19:54, 15 February 2015 (UTC)
- More or less; not trouble, just the load of people with renamed accounts and the total number of participiants took me now 24h to process and check. Voting starts in ~10 min. -- Rillke(q?) 22:15, 15 February 2015 (UTC)

Note for 2016
[edit]The rules MUST NOT be changed after the begin of the 2016 beta-tests. Please read RFC 2119 (BCP 14), notably MUST NOT is not the same as SHOULD NOT, there are absolutely no exceptions apart from abort and restart from scratch, seppuku, or other form of "net suicide". –Be..anyone (talk) 04:34, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
- Indeed. Too many mishaps this year due to last minute actions. -- Rillke(q?) 08:29, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
- Just in case, because I removed the plain text timeline as unused in the navbar, should there be a mass mailing to R1 voters and/or a new centralnotice as in 2014? And what does "opt-out" mean, apart from "blank talk page section before reading"? The German translation could be rather wrong, I'm not aware of any "opt-out" black list. –Be..anyone (talk) 17:46, 18 February 2015 (UTC)

- Opps. Done. Thanks. --Steinsplitter (talk) 19:29, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
Btw., the page says: "Round 2 ... ends on 22 February 2015, 23:59 [UTC]". Does this mean that a vote from 23:59:30 is not accepted? Shouldn't be better to end the voting at 24:00 UTC? --ŠJů (talk) 19:25, 17 February 2015 (UTC)

- Done Awesome! Thank you! Rillke(q?) 21:55, 17 February 2015 (UTC)
- Thank you! I wonder why the whole second between 23:59:59 and 24:00:00 is counted to the next day (wouldn't be better and simpler to end the voting with the end of the day instead of such weird time?) but the difference is negligible now (a whole minute was worse inaccuracy). --ŠJů (talk) 17:01, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
- Announcement
Can we announce by the Sitenotice of Commons now? Or a Global notice will come out soon?--miya (talk) 23:57, 18 February 2015 (UTC)
My impression is,...
[edit]... that only relatively small number of people know about the R2 which will end in 2 days. Last year and also for R1 this year, there was clearly more participation. I wonder where are all the sitenotices, bot messages etc.? --A.Savin 07:49, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- I agree... m:CentralNotice/Calendar says "Picture of the Year" should be announced to "All Projects" from "2015/01/17 till 2015-02-22 23:59" (6 days long!), but it seems not working (sorry i dont know why - i dont know much about centralnotice). In order to announce to all the Wikimedians with the Centralnotice, I think, we should expand the R2 period, with changing the ending date in Commons:Picture of the Year/2014/Rules/Time/data.--miya (talk) 15:08, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- Well...at least I made a sitenotice announcement. Thank you A.Savin for your comment! --miya (talk) 16:43, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- @Miya: thanks for reporting this (permalink). Please see this note on the CentralNotice calendar page:
Please note that putting a banner on this calendar does not mean that it automatically "gets done". You still need to design and run the campaign, or ask a Meta administrator or Central notice administrator to do so for you
- If there's ever an issue with CentralNotice, feel free to report it on m:RFH at the first sign of trouble (or even before the trouble starts, preferably). PiRSquared17 (talk) 02:16, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
PiRSquared17, thank you for all your work for POTY! Now I understand how and where to request help!--miya (talk) 14:56, 23 February 2015 (UTC)
As to a trouble, well, I still have a trouble - I don't know how to translate the banners on meta:
- m:CNBanner:POTY 2014 R1-poty2014-text-1/en
- m:CNBanner:POTY 2014 R1-poty2014-text-2/en
- m:CNBanner:POTY 2014 R1-credits/en
Perhaps I have to make one more request at m:RFH. --miya (talk) 14:56, 23 February 2015 (UTC)

About R2 end date
[edit]@Rillke, Uğurkent, Odisha1, and Beria: There were lots of unexpected thing which caused the schedule change. I propose to expand the R2 period, that is, to make the end date to "2015-02-28 23:59" - so that we can provide at least 2 days of central notice (as planned at m:CentralNotice/Calendar) and several more days of Commons notice.--miya (talk) 15:08, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
In other words I think the period without any sitenotice or central notice should be considered as a testing period.--miya (talk) 16:47, 20 February 2015 (UTC)
- Yes, +1 Myia :-) -- Odisha1 (talk) 07:14, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
- Support -- Rillke(q?) 08:30, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, Odisha1 and Rillke. Let's expand the R2 period "till 2015-02-28 23:59". Then... how can we do that?
- Fix Commons:Picture of the Year/2014/Rules/Time/data
- Add the ending date to Commons MediaWiki:Sitenotice and m:CentralNotice/Calendar
Is that enough? --miya (talk) 04:05, 22 February 2015 (UTC) to
- Now I changed Commons:Picture of the Year/2014/Rules/Time/data as "r2end = 2015-02-28 23:59:59". --09:17, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

Navigating to File page for video
[edit]Is it just me or is it almost impossible to navigate to the File: page for a video from the voting page Commons:Picture of the Year/2014/R2/Gallery (without "manually" searching for the video title in the Search box)? It's trivial to get the File: page of a picture, you just click on it (actually, I'm Ctrl-clicking on them all). But if you do that with either of the videos on that page, it plays the video. It seems the only way to do it (again, not counting a Search) is to click on the "info" icon, then the little "pencil" icon to "edit description", then finally the "File" tab on the resulting edit page. (IOW, you have to pretend that you want to change the image description to get to the file page. That's crazy.) Now, normally when you hover over a video thumnail you see a little "menu" through which you can get to the File: page (also a bit confusing, but I'm now used to it). Has that feature been disabled on the voting page? And if so, is that really necessary? - dcljr (talk) 07:55, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
- For me a jQuery UI dialogue opens which contains the player when I click on a video thumbnail. In this player, I can open a menu and from there, I get to an info button which when pressed will show a link to the file description page. -- Rillke(q?) 08:35, 21 February 2015 (UTC)
- Hmm. OK, now I'm seeing the "MENU" item in the player with the Llama video. It comes and goes, though, when I move the mouse around. Apparently something about my browser configuration (FF 31.3.0 on a really old Gentoo Linux installation) doesn't like this video. I have to actually stop the drying-lake video (by clicking on it) in order to see the controls (and menu). Anyway, why is it not possible to see the controls/menu when just hovering over the thumbnail, as usual? (Alternatively, upon clicking the "info" icon, the description text could be linked to the description page.) - dcljr (talk) 08:34, 22 February 2015 (UTC)

- What browser are you using? PiRSquared17 (talk) 03:31, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
Invalid votes
[edit]How to handle invalid votes like that? Is there a bot that will remove them, or has it to be controlled by hand? I actually thought there was an abuse filter to prevent sth. like that, no? --A.Savin 06:33, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- Ineligible users will be shown on Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2014/R2/Results/Voters; similar to Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2014/R1/Results/Voters and their votes will be removed from the result pages while we process that like we did in R1. Since there is usually only a very small number of ineligible voters, I usually take the time to verify each affected account manually again. -- Rillke(q?) 10:04, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- BTW, all changes not made by the user who's vote is changed are logged. And processing this log. Let's keep that as short as possible. -- Rillke(q?) 10:09, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
Two recomendations for next year
[edit]FIRST One is to make new category Gastronomy (instead of falling into Objects, rocks and miscellaneous). This cat should be on its own, its important enough.
SECOND One : I reccomend rotation of photo gallery in second round (perhaps one per day). Its human perception to vote on first few while loosing concentration when going to bottom, if one get to bottom. Its about better distribution. --Mile (talk) 13:27, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- Mile, thanks for your feedback. We use seeded randomization. Confer to my reply on our help page. In short: Login with a different user name and the sorting will be different for you. This is to enable users to start appreciating the best works of Commons and resume that process at any time without being distorted by a different sorting. -- Rillke(q?) 19:23, 27 February 2015 (UTC)
- Didnt it use to be randomized every time the page was loaded? I thought I remmebered voting once and refreshing the page and finding that all the images were shuffled around every time I loaded the page, even while remaining logged in. Soap (talk) 18:13, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- Your browser carries out shuffling, so there is a short delay and you will see the original sorting for a short moment. Though the browser is supposed to restore the same sorting for the same user every time they visit the same gallery. -- Rillke(q?) 18:57, 1 March 2015 (UTC)
- Yeah I know. It's working that way for me now. I'm just saying I think I remember in a previous POTY contest that it was deliberately completely random, such that a returning voter would see a different order on every pageview, even with the same browser and cookies and all. What happened?
[edit]I guess it's a bit late to discuss this, but I am curious. When checking how many votes received this photo to make it to the 2nd round, I was surprised to see that it got only 390 of them when my own photo received 477 votes but didn't make it to the 2nd round. Am I missing something? -- Christopher Crouzet (talk) 13:20, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- In R1 there were more than 900 candidates. The 54 files, top 30s and/or category #1 and #2, were promoted to R2 by the rule#Image eligibility. Your photo was wonderful but sorry it was #3 in its category (People and human activities). To illustrate the R1 result I made a table Commons:Picture of the Year/2014/R1/Results/Finalists. Thank you for asking.--miya (talk) 15:34, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- I didn't notice this rule, sorry! Thanks for taking the time to let me know and for organizing this! -- Christopher Crouzet (talk) 15:53, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
(Re-using the same topic since that is what I wonder..) Did someone win, is it over? Here it says "Round 2 begins on 15 februari 2015 and ends on 28 februari 2015, 23:59:59 UTC" so that round is over, or? And no text about what happens now!? At Commons:Picture of the Year there is a link "vote now" but then there is no vote!? Its all very confusing. /Hangsna (talk) 16:03, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
- We are tallying the votes. I guess on Sunday we will announce the results. -- Rillke(q?) 17:00, 3 March 2015 (UTC)
R1 & R2 gallery links
[edit]how about putting permanent inks to the R1 & R2 galleries on the front page, instead of burying them? people just might want to actually SEE the image galleries, whether voting is happening, or not. Lx 121 (talk) 19:34, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
- & i'm sorry if my comment seems a little bit harsh, but i am annoyed because the page is locked, for no good reason; so now instead of fixing it myself, i must write out a talk page comment, to "ask" an admin to please fix something that i could do myself in less time than it's taken me to go to the talkpage, add topic, & write out a comment, which THEN has to be read by someone with admin-level accesss, who is interested enough in poty to watch the talk pages, @ whatever point in time at which they happen to be here, THEN they have to "decide" if they agree with the "request", THEN, if they do agree THEY have to make the necessary edit... which i could have done by myself in less than 60 seconds. this isn't good wiki-process, this is ANTI-wiki process. -__- Lx 121 (talk) 20:14, 4 March 2015 (UTC)
- There were less—as in "almost no"—page protections this year, and I used that to fix minor stuff like the links on the navbar for R1 and later R2. You are apparently not talking about Picture of the Year, I just wikilinked 2014 R2 on this page, assuming that this is related to what you want. –Be..anyone (talk) 03:57, 5 March 2015 (UTC)
- hmmmm... well then either something has been changed, or mediawiki was experiencing some rather serious technical difficulties; because i spent a fair bit of time surfing poty2014 pages before posting that, & it seemed like every single one of them was set to "view source", rather than "edit". & yes, i did login, & no i'm not blocked from any type of standard/established user editing privileges, as far as i am aware.
- & ty for the linkbox, but what i actually intended was to add working ri & r2 gallery links to the poty2014 "mainpage", so that casual browsers can actually FIND & VIEW the galleries, rather than just seeing a notice about how voting has ended...

poty OVER-"protection"
[edit]for the second year in a row, ALL the poty pages have been "protected", locking out all non-admin users.
when did this become a "policy"!?
now, i can understand tamper-proofing the VOTES, that is obvious & necessary.
BUT
commons is still a WIKI
& it is not appropriate to arbitrarily lock users out of the poty editing proccess like this.
it is also not very efficient, as "ordinary" users now have to "request" page-fixes, rather than simply DOING them.
free & open participation is a fundamental policy of the wikimedia community; we DO NOT allow users, or groups of users, to "own" space on the wiki, & protection is ONLY to be used where there is a demonstrated need.
& i DO NOT see a "demonstrated need" to lock out ALL non-admin users from the poty pages.
maybe you could make a case for partial-protection, that only "established users" should be granted the "privilege" of changing things on poty pages, MAYBE you can make a case for that.
but locking out EVERYBODY who isn't admin-level!? no. if that's going to be a "thing" on commons, then it needs to be discussed as a community decision, & it sets a VERY bad precedent for future (mis-)use of "protection" policy.
(i did mention this to the poty-admins last year, but apparently a LOUDER conversation is needed)

R2 result
[edit]Thanks to Rillke, the R2 result has been done with counting and processing here:
- Commons:Picture of the Year/2014/R2/Results/Candidates
- Commons:Picture of the Year/2014/R2/Results/Voters
The sorted result by vote count is here:
--miya (talk) 07:51, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
- , great. Hopefully it will be simpler next year, if everything needed now ended up in a 2014 category for copy and paste. There were some surprising gaps in 2013. –Be..anyone (talk) 17:53, 13 March 2015 (UTC)
