File:Jeju Island.jpg moved (note for committee)

[edit]

before counting votes, those from Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/v/Cheju etm 2000097 lrg.jpg should be added to Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/v/Jeju Island.jpg. -- Rillke(q?) 11:49, 2 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How are votes counted? —Mono 03:17, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'll take care for that after returning from holiday (9th of Feb.), if Kalan does not beat me. -- Rillke(q?) 13:22, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Rillke: Just a reminder for this...R2 was scheduled for Feb 21. —Mono 22:23, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you and sorry. Running that tool tomorrow. -- Rillke(q?) 22:59, 16 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Doing… - 50% of the vote pages are analyzed but eligibility checking will presumably take a couple of hours. Marcus Qwertyus has been renamed to User:Mark Schierbecker, whose votes must be tallied manually then. -- Rillke(q?) 20:01, 17 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
✓ Done - I am going to explain and check the results tomorrow. THEY ARE NOT READY TO BE COMMUNICATED YET. -- Rillke(q?) 00:09, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Mono, Miya, and Beria: The end result is visible at Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R2/Gallery. Please check

  1. that I correctly disqualified these votes: Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Results/Disqualified votes (see also voter information)
  2. that I correctly tallied the votes for the candidates. The script I used is available at User:Rillke/POTY2013r1.eligibility-checker-and-vote-tallier.js
  3. that I correctly filled the category with the 2 top voted media files in each category
  4. that Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R2/Gallery looks sane.

Overview: Special:PrefixIndex/Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Results, Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Results.

Please feel free adding appropriate badges to the files after verifying and prettifying Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R1/Results. That would be a great help. Thanks in advance -- Rillke(q?) 14:42, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

<very serious remark>I protest and very seriously oppose to that result, since none of my 5 FP is a finalist. That is a complete outrageous result and of course there is some problem with that, since my pictures are the best in the world</very serious remark> :D :D :D :D :D :D :D
Serious now: Looks good to me, but just as curiosity how many pictures we ended up with? Béria L. Rodríguez msg 20:02, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, great to see you're still around :) 31+19 is the answer. -- Rillke(q?) 23:40, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry my disappearance, I was a bit busy getting married and that comes before the POTY. ;) But now I'm back! :D Béria L. Rodríguez msg 13:45, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wow, congrats. Hope you had a nice time and all the best for the future; and of course glad to see you are back. -- Rillke(q?) 13:51, 19 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Adertising in foreign languages on cy Wicipedia

[edit]

Can someone point me to the procedures of informing other languages that the advertising banner was on its way? The English banner appeared (and still is) on the Welsh language Wikipedia. Usually we are forewarned with fundraising banners, but not one of our translators on cy can find when and how and if this was done. Many thanks. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 16:10, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Although I am no longer responsible for running the CentralNotice campaigns, I can tell you that we do not inform specific wikis of our intention to run banners. The banner was scheduled and announced through the CentralNotice calendar on Meta; the campaign was implemented there. AFAIK it should be running only in certain languages and I've will ask a Meta admin to investigate this. —Mono 00:58, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Blame me, but fixed now. (Also, thank you for this.) PiRSquared17 (talk) 01:40, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Many thanks, both. Llywelyn2000 (talk) 20:43, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Introduction fixes for R2

[edit]

Small Note: This way is bad idea (for the future). All required strings should be prepared and translated in the preparation stage, and then just hide and unhide as required. --Kaganer (talk) 12:21, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

+1. Translate extension has a translation cache and translators would have had it easier next year +the translation could be completed by the translators in time. -- Rillke(q?) 12:46, 11 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Current status

[edit]

Either Template:POTY2013/header or Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Introduction needs to be modified to explain the status of the POTY competition between voting periods when transcluded at Commons:Picture of the Year. At the moment, readers of that page get no indication that the second round of voting is coming up soon. - dcljr (talk) 23:19, 18 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Now it reads Round 2 will start 21 February 2014. in the header for me. I think that's ok. -- Rillke(q?) 17:31, 20 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Did you check it on the page Commons:Picture of the Year or just on Commons:Picture of the Year/2013 or Template:POTY2013/header? Because I wasn't seeing the top "menu bar" type thing on the first page, only on the latter pages. Anyway, the point is moot now since round 2 is open. Still, this could possibly be a problem in the future if nothing was actually changed to fix the problem. - dcljr (talk) 19:53, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ah. I am still not seeing the menu bar on Commons:Picture of the Year. I assume that was where the text "Round 2 will start 21 February 2014" was? All the lower part was saying was "Voting is not currently in progress" (or was it just "Voting unavailable"?) with a greyed out voting button. - dcljr (talk) 19:58, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The tabs are disabled there because they require some special CSS and JS that I did not want to load on every page at Commons. -- Rillke(q?) 20:09, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rules for choosing the finalists

[edit]

Last year it was easy to find out, how the finalsists were choosen, as it was disputed here. Now I looked for this information and didn't find it. While this is not one of the informations which schould be found in big letters at the top of the page, I think there should be a text, which tells every relevant fact of the voting process an which everybody who seeks it will find. --Kersti (talk) 13:13, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rules & eligibility :: Image eligibility // Regeln & Wahlberechtigung :: Bildqualifizierung
Then have a look at Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/R1/Results/Candidates
--Kersti (talk) 20:12, 21 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Where's the greek translation

[edit]

Why isn't the greek translation appearing, despite the language selected in my preferences and why did I receive a message in English when I've translated it days ago? Who's responsible for uploading/binding or whatever the translations and why is this restricted and I can't translate? "Unknown error: "tpt-translation-restricted"" - Badseed talk 22:34, 22 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Badseed: Translations appear automatically through the Translate extension, but the system is a little tricky. However, you should now be able to translate those messages at that link. I am looking into potential solutions for automatically displaying the talk page message in the right language. —Mono 00:22, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Mono: Thank you very much for the quick response. Indeed I had no problem with these segments this time. I also see that there's an option for greek in the talk page message too now, that's great. I should have asked at an earlier time, when time wouldn't be pressing and also be a little more alert about missing trans's and things to do. Thanks! - Badseed talk 02:30, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Voting problem

[edit]

I clicked on the witches' well by mistake, not the image I wanted to vote for. How do you cancel the vote? ProfDEH (talk) 15:15, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@ProfDEH: Go back to the voting page and scroll down to the image you voted for. There should be a button that says 'Remove vote' - click on that and you can vote for another image. —Mono 16:13, 23 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not voting on this one...

[edit]

... because all the images you've come up with are really, really good. I look over the list and I like this one or that one, but I simply don't have the ability to recognize a special excess of quality that could separate one from the others. They're all at the top of the scale, and that's my final answer. My congratulations to you all! Wnt (talk) 00:25, 1 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

And my vote goes to...

R2 results

[edit]

Please have a look at Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R2/Results/Voters/verification and decide. After this is done, I can proceed. Thank you! -- Rillke(q?) 18:17, 8 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

So, I think we can move on. Thank you, miya for verifying the voter eligibility.

-- Rillke(q?) 11:35, 11 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Should I start creating results pages or do we need to do more checking? —Mono 16:06, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ideally, User:Kalan would run his tool so we've some redundancy in checking. -- Rillke(q?) 21:23, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Rillke for your hard work! I checked top 10 with human eyes and found no problem with human eyes. How about declaring the top 3 (+α) here and wait a day or two to accept comments or correction (if any) before pulishing the final results.--miya (talk) 01:56, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
 Support -- Rillke(q?) 10:42, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I believe we can publish the final results now. Mono, will you create the result top page, for I'm not sure which way is good to display them?.--miya (talk) 23:45, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

R2 top 3 (+α)

[edit]

According to Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/R2/Results/Candidates (thanks to Rillke!), the top 3 and runners-by are as below.--miya (talk) 02:15, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I added 6 more in case we'd display 10 or 12 files on POTY top page like POTY2010 or POTY2012.--miya (talk) 01:32, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Licenses

[edit]
The FAL license link [1] seems broken. Is it a problem? Do we need to host that license in our local server like GFDL? Jee 03:42, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, sounds like a good idea. Some users will certainly complain again because the text itself is not CC-By-SA but I think as long as Commons is up, we have the duty provide users with the full license text. Also a good question for the WMF legal team. Perhaps they've a better suggestion. -- Rillke(q?) 07:45, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Rillke. Could you make the necessary steps? I even failed to find that license text now. :( Jee 10:06, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It's here on Commons now. The license itself suggests linking to artlibre.org … so maybe we should just add a link from {{FAL}} to our local copy. -- Rillke(q?) 11:02, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. BTW, it seems http://www.artlibre.org/ is just a parked domain now. Do they stopped their service? :( Jee 16:05, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
http://artlibre.org/lal/en works for me today (good, IIRC the link is also used on Wikia). –Be..anyone (talk) 16:41, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
But still looks somehow broken: "“work” either means the initial work" and if you look into the source code, you'll notice that it is invalid (<a element before doctype). -- Rillke(q?) 16:53, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Jkadavoor, do you mind if I propose to shorten CC lincense description, ex. from "(License: Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported (CC BY-SA 3.0))" to "(License: CC BY-SA 3.0)"?--miya (talk) 15:32, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes; you can. Jee 15:58, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Shortened. Jee 16:38, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you!--miya (talk) 03:43, 15 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Captions of the Finalists

[edit]

I nominated all the finalists to be POTD (if not yet). Please translate (or improve) their captions into your language.

>>Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Translations/Captions

--miya (talk) 02:15, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Off topic: I suggest to add a direct link to source for this Flickr image. Now I need to visit the source in Commons to find the link. Author should be Wagner Machado Carlos Lemes, Goiânia, Brazil; edit by King of Hearts. derivativeFX is a nonsense in handling attribution. :( Jee 12:20, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Jee. Productive comments and adding/improving captions/credits are always welcome!
Hum... I'd like to link from the credit to the outside sources like Commons:Picture of the Year/2011, in order to keep translation of the captions as simple as possible. --miya (talk) 15:23, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
One user as even no user page at all; I pinged him. Jee 17:17, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you.--miya (talk) 11:33, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

How to publish the final results?

[edit]

How about creating two more pages:

--miya (talk) 11:33, 14 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, sounds like a plan. -- Rillke(q?) 20:09, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK. I'll start creating the result page (with the style in Commons:Picture of the Year/2012/Results/en), if no one will. Improving it will be always welcome. ;) --miya (talk) 21:11, 21 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Started with Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Results/en. I'm afraid if I can manage with translation process... Rillke, can you get how many votes did we get through R1 and R2? --miya (talk) 01:27, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Congratulations for this progress. Jee 02:43, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Jee. The page still needs to be fixed to fit this year's POTY. Help us if you have a good idea. :)--miya (talk) 12:40, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

WE GOT NEARLY 5800 VOTES.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR PARTICIPATIONS!
(Correct me, for I'm not familiar to English grammer ;)--miya (talk) 13:55, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In R1, we got a lot more votes. I am looking for unique voters (R1 and R2) now. This may take several minutes. -- Rillke(q?) 14:00, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
According to MYSQL, we had 4070 different voters. This is quite surprising. Next year we must perform better to retain users in R2. Database is at tool-labs (local, public database `s51816__krakenbase_p`) controlled by the octodata tool. -- Rillke(q?) 00:59, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I added some tags for translation. Please continue tweaking the page and ping me if it is more or less finalized. whym (talk) 15:23, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, whym!--miya (talk) 15:32, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not a fan of writing a text over the winner picture. It destroy it. Furthermore, it is a recommendation of " Commons" to "de-tag" the pictures... Is't it a paradoxe ? --Jebulon (talk) 19:29, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I agree to remove a text over the winner picture. Let's remove the barnstar as well as the texts over the image. By the way the version as of 2014-03-22 21:43:54 looks broken on my Firefox or iPad mini (please see File:POTY2013resultpage 2014-03-22T2143.PNG). I'll try to edit it...--miya (talk) 23:22, 22 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Edited. --miya (talk) 01:46, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Edited again, for the page on Chrome looked untidy. Now I believe it is OK with Chrome, Firefox, IE and iPad. Is it OK with Mac, too?--miya (talk) 13:15, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Message

I added a kind of thank-you message at the bottom (or top) of the page. Is it ok? or too long?--miya (talk) 15:56, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Looks fine. Are we ready to announce the results? —Mono 19:45, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps one more step: we need arrangement for translation of Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Results/en here, Picture of the Year/2013/Results.--miya (talk) 22:24, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, you already arranged Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Results/R2! Thank you, Mono!--miya (talk) 22:29, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think we are ready. Thanks!.--miya (talk) 23:08, 23 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mono, would you please use Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Results instead of Introduction page to display the final result...in order to arrange the translations smoothly? --miya (talk) 11:08, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Vorschlag für R2 in 2014

[edit]

In the first round, 2852 people voted for all 962 files. In the second round, 2919 people voted for the 50 finalists (the top 30 overall and top 2 in each category)..."), da gehts wohl noch händisch? --dontworry (talk) 08:12, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Dont worry. people votedvotes casted. Merke: Erst nachdenken, dann hässliche Bemerkungen ablassen oder besser einstecken. Selbst 6000 Stimmen wären nichts, das 3 Leute per Hand kontrollieren wollen. Aber DU KANNST GERNE MEINEN KOMMITEE PLATZ HABEN! Ich gebe ihn gerne ab. -- Rillke(q?) 08:30, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
So alles vorgekaut. Zufrieden? Wovon träumst Du? Magst Du meinen Komitee-Platz nun haben? Einmalige Chance. Jetzt zugreifen. -- Rillke(q?) 11:56, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(Yes/No) -- Rillke(q?) 13:17, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

-- Rillke(q?) 17:53, 30 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The Share gadget

[edit]

We should not link to facebook or google+! Those services are bad for people. Palosirkka (talk) 09:22, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 5, 7?

Please fix the numbering of the images! // WikiPhoenix [Talk] 12:44, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

No; it is because some candidates share equal points. Jee 13:07, 28 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

POTY 2013 assessment

[edit]

Hello, Shouldn't we have a special assessment for the POTY 2013 finalists? That was the case in previous years (example). But at the moment, there is no mention for the image awarded second place in POTY 2013, for instance. The POTY2012 general assessment is shown below. Regards, --Myrabella (talk) 12:14, 28 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think so, as 2013 finalists are all these images: Commons:Picture of the Year/2013/Finalists. --Myrabella (talk) 07:56, 29 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I don´t know how remove users does not have the necessary amount of editions like @PupyFaki: --Wilfredo R. Rodríguez H. (talk) 16:03, 2 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Just leave them where they are. Maybe they had fun tricking the JavaScript but in the end their vote was not counted if they were ineligible. -- Rillke(q?) 19:46, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Let's talk about 2014

[edit]

(Ping Rillke, Mono, Miya)

I will start this week with drawing up all the candidates from this year and agruping then into categories, but as I do that, let's talk about the rules and other details about next year POTY? Béria L. Rodríguez msg 19:31, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Great. You are not in IRC currently? -- Rillke(q?) 19:47, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
At work, IRC / Gtalk / Basically any chat system is blocked :D I'll be online at nigth time (Brazil timezone) and then go to IRC! :D Béria L. Rodríguez msg 21:15, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
A good news! By the way I'd like to revert this edit back to a proper Introduction version - so that we can check POTY2013 introduction easily.--miya (talk) 11:51, 25 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(Ping Rillke, Beria, Miya again)

Hi all, what's the latest on this? Thanks, —Mono (how to reply) 04:59, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps we could have an IRC meeting to walk through the points that remain to be done and the schedule? Also could we post somewhere that we are looking for new committee members and helpers? -- Rillke(q?) 09:13, 1 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Since in my work we can't acess IRC can we do the metting in the weekend? Béria L. Rodríguez msg 14:38, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Fine by me. -- Rillke(q?) 17:18, 3 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Mono and Miya: - Will you have time today, 2014-12-13 21:30 UTC? -- Rillke(q?) 04:53, 13 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Let's talk about 2013

[edit]

The POTY2013 introduction claims that the results are not yet available. Something doesn't work as it should, a fix also working for 2014 would be nice. I've redirected POTY2013 to the results, maybe undo this. –Be..anyone (talk) 04:25, 20 December 2014 (UTC)[reply]
