EML file
[edit]Support has been questioned at COM:HD#EML file. Am I right that an EML file would be oos? — 🇺🇦Jeff G. ツ please ping or talk to me🇺🇦 11:25, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
- 99% of the time, I would expect that an EML file would be out of scope because it is not a media file. However, if the file was in scope on Wikisource then it would also be acceptable here. Daask (talk) 16:38, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
PNG and exif
[edit]This page mentions that PNGs do not support exif. Is that really a problem when they (and mediawiki) support XMP, which for the most part supports all the same tags as exif does? If it really was a problem, there is a non-standard way to embed exif into PNG files we could make mediawiki support, but i would encourage uploaders to just use XMP for metadata in png files. I'd be interested to hear more about user needs in this regard. Bawolff (talk) 17:35, 12 May 2024 (UTC)
Stray explanations of why some preferred GIFs
[edit]I'm looking at File:Blue dot 7px.png#Format and File talk:Blue dot 7px.png#More PNG troubles, which is basically one author's series of reasons why he preferred GIFs over PNGs (in 2008). Obviously, that file was converted to PNG and the GIF deleted and redirected despite the author's wishes. Others have not been converted, eg. File:Green dot 7px.gif. File:Nopngs.gif#filelinks has 17 links of similar notices. I reckon some of these actions should happen:
- The conversion from GIF to PNG could be reverted.
- The remaining GIFs could be converted to PNGs.
- The notices about why GIFs are superior to PNGs could be removed from the images that have already been converted to PNGs.
- The notices about why GIFs are superior to PNGs could be removed from all these images.
At the very least, a page on a PNG image shouldn't include an explanation of why it is a GIF, when it's not a GIF. Daask (talk) 16:18, 29 July 2024 (UTC)
