Wiki Loves Monuments 2024 in Syria

Wiki Loves Monuments is an international photographic competition to promote historic sites around the World through Wikimedia projects (mainly Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons). Everybody can participate. By submitting your photos to the competition, you share and help preserve the cultural heritage of Syria for all people in Syria and the rest of the world, to enjoy through the internet.

In October, you may upload as many pictures as you want of cultural sites that you have visited. Pictures don't have to be taken in October but must be uploaded during that month to be considered. Provide your photo with {{Wiki Loves Monuments 2024|sy}} template. At the end of the month, the contest jury will begin evaluating the photographs and will choose the best 10 pictures of the monuments in Syria, and ultimately in the world.

Why participate?

Syria is a small country, but with monuments wherever you go. In every corner, there are cultural heritage sites worth a visit. This competition is a great opportunity to bring your camera, go to the heritage sites listed, take some photos and show the planet and culture from your point of view to the rest of the world!

Participating in the competition is a great way to experiment and learn which photos that gain recognition. You certainly don't need to be a professional photographer to take photos useful for Wikipedia. Here's a great chance to try it out! Entries to the local competition are eligible for selection to the international finale and did we mention there are prices to win?

The Jury

In October, you may upload as many pictures (old or new) as you want from the given monuments list that you have visited. At the end of the month, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the cultural heritage monuments in Syria to submit to represent in the international finale. If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides.

Eligible objects

The competition name refers to monuments, but in the Syriajan context, this is to be interpreted as anything from four types of heritage sites: protected buildings, ancient remains, protected ships and pleasure boats and working life museums. Each of these sites are given unique identification numbers by official authorities and any official site is eligible. The lists below may not be fully up to date or shortend, and where the data differs all objects from the original data are valid objects.

The jury will determine the winners of the international contest taking into the consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):

  • Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
  • Originality;
  • Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.
