Why participate?
Participate in Wiki Loves Monuments, the largest photography competition in the world, and help Wikipedia document monuments and heritage buildings.
Participating is fun! By photographing and sharing images of heritage nearby you, you can explore more about Rwanda heritage and learn about it. It's a nice challenge to improve your photography skills, and you can of course win some nice prizes. We are awarding voucher prizes to the top 5 winners. The national jury will select up to top 10 images that will represent Rwanda in the international finale but ONLY the top 5 will be awarded with prize vouchers. These images will compete for the international awards. More information about the international competition is available on www.wikilovesmonuments.org .
You can also upload images that you may have taken already during one of your travels to the national competition of that country. Check if your travel destination participates in Wiki Loves Monuments this year.
Competition rules
We try to keep the competition clean and simple to participate. There are only a few rules for photos to participate in the contest in Rwanda. Let's quickly go through them. Every submission should be:
- Self-taken and self-uploaded;
- Uploaded during the contest period (29thth September - October 31st);
- During the upload process, you give permission with a CC BY-SA license to re-use the image;
- Contain a listed monument, which you have identified using the monument identifier (see elsewhere on this page);
Next to that, there are a few practical rules:
- You should have an activated e-mail address on Wikimedia Commons;
- If the photo gets deleted for any reason, it is automatically disqualified from the competition;
- You are responsible for following the law while taking and uploading the photo.
You may upload as many pictures (old or new) as you want of monuments that you have visited. At the end of the month, the national jury will evaluate the photographs and select the best 10 pictures of the monuments in Rwanda to submit to represent in the international finale.
Prizes
- 1st Winner-->Voucher worth $80
- 2nd Winner-->Voucher worth $60
- 3rd Winner-->Voucher worth $50
More about Rwanda's monuments
Rwanda has got a good number of monuments located in all parts of the country, some were established centuries ago. You may explore more about Rwanda's list of monuments here
The Jury
Our jury will process the images through two or three rounds during November. At the end of this process, the jury determines the top-10. If there are any doubts about the implementation of the rules, the jury decides.
Judging criteria
The jury will determine the winners of the international contest taking into the consideration the following criteria (in no particular order):
- Technical quality (sharpness, use of light, perspective etc.);
- Originality;
- Usefulness of the image for Wikipedia.
Images that reach a top ranking of the international finale, will typically at least fulfil the technical criteria of the ‘Featured Image’ process at Wikimedia Commons. But feel free to submit many images, and let the jury be concerned if they are good enough.
