Introduction / Study Design
[edit]For the 2013 participants' survey, a similar questionnaire was used as for the 2012 survey in order to allow for longitudinal comparisons. A number of modifications were made however in order to correct for shortcomings of the 2012 questionnaire which became apparent during data analysis (see the discussion page of the 2013 questionnaire for a list of modifications). Also two new questions were added: one regarding topics for future photo contests, and one asking the participants if and for what purpose they would like to be contacted by the contest organizers or their local chapter.
For the 2014 participants' survey, the same questionnaire will be used as for the 2013 participants' survey, with minor adaptations to account for the change of the year and to allow for the same questionnaire to be used for both Wiki Loves Monuments and Wiki Loves Earth contests.
From April 2013 to January 2014, the work related to the participants' survey was supported by a group of students from the Bern University of Applied Sciences.
Research Questions
[edit]- What are the characteristics of WLM participants, and where are the differences to the other members of Wikipedia / Wikimedia?
- How do the characteristics of WLM and its participants evolve over time?
- How did the WLM participants like the contest? What would they like to see improved?
- What motivates the participants to participate in the WLM contest and what else would they like to do in the Wiki community?
- What differences are there between the countries? And how can they be explained?
Expected Benefits
[edit]- The study provides further insights with regard to the particularities of the WLM contest, the characteristics of its participants and their view of the contest. It will also provide information on how these aspects develop over time. It will thus provide valuable input for the further development and transformation of the contest in the future.
- The study helps chapters to better exploit the opportunities provided by the WLM contest with regard to the acquisition and retention of new contributors.
- By providing international comparisons, the study facilitates the exchange of experiences and best practices across countries, as it sharpens people’s perception of international differences and helps them to take them into account in their exchanges.
