Wiki Loves Folklore

Wiki Loves Folklore is an international photographic contest organized annually at Wikimedia Commons to document folk cultures in different regions of the world. These documentation could be in images or videos. The Igbo community will join in the contest by telling the Igbo cultural heritage story in pictures, videos or audios. To put the images into good use, there will also be a gender gap edit-a-thon on Igbo content to create or expand articles on feminism, women biographies and gender-focused topics on Igbo Wiki projects.

Scope

This photography contest is focused on Igbo folk culture on categories, such as, but not limited to:

  • Folk festivals
  • folk dances
  • folk music
  • folk activities
  • folk games
  • folk cuisine
  • folk wear
  • folklore and tradition: folktales, traditional song and dance, folk plays, folkgames
  • seasonal event
  • calendar customs
  • folk arts
  • folk religion
  • Mythology, etc.


Prizes

1st prize: $50

2nd prize: $30

3rd prize: $20

4th prize: $15

5th prize: $10

Consolation prize for 5 contributors

6th prize: ₦5000

7th prize: ₦5000

8th prize: ₦5000

9th prize: ₦5000

10th prize: ₦5000

The timeline for the Wiki Loves Folklore Igbo Community

  • Start for submissions: 14 February, 2023 00:01 (WAT)
  • Deadline for submissions: 28 February, 2023 23:59 (WAT)
  • Results Declaration: To be declared after assessment

What we won't accept

We won't accept media that are:

  • Out of Commons Project scope.
  • Which lack EXIF information.
  • that are excessively processed and digitally altered.
  • Pornographic and explicit images.
  • Artwork due to copyright issues, etc.

How to participate

To participate follow these steps shown with graphic images below. Also Sign your names under 'Partcipants' and log into the dashboard to track your uploads and edits.

Identify some cultural heritage images/videos
From festivals, material culture, dances, cuisine, clothing or daily life routine find inspiration for your images here.


Take photos
Take as many and as good photos as you can, try different angles. Even if the photo doesn't win you a prize, it may help Wikipedia,Wikidata and other projects!


Describe your images
Describe what you photographed in the image description and captions. Record the location name, description, and date of photo.


Upload to Commons
Upload your images to Wikimedia Commons between 14 - 28 February, 2023. Create an account, if you don't have one already.
