Commons:Wiki Loves Africa 2024 in Zambia
Wiki Loves Africa is an annual competition open to participants from all across Africa, inviting them to contribute media related to the year's designated theme to Wikimedia Commons for use on Wikipedia and other websites under the Wikimedia Foundation. The contest encourages individuals to contribute various forms of media, such as photographs, videos, and audio recordings, that visually represent the theme chosen for the year. Each year, the theme undergoes a change and is selected by the community, encompassing universal, visually captivating, and culturally specific subjects. Examples of these themes include markets, rites of passage, festivals, public art, cuisine, natural history, urban life, daily routines, notable figures, and more.
The current edition of the contest focuses on "Africa Create," marking the third installment of the competition in Zambia. The theme, "Africa Create," encourages submissions of media that capture the processes of creating, inventing, and manufacturing culturally significant items. This can encompass a wide range of subjects, including makeup, art, hairstyles, music, dance, clothing, woven materials, and more. Essentially, it seeks to showcase elements that promote Africa's rich heritage and culture, as expressed through various artistic forms such as music, song, dance, and movement.
Additionally, as part of this edition, an editathon will be organized at the University of Zambia, providing an opportunity for collaborative content creation and further engagement within the Wikimedia community.

History
[edit]In 2019, Zambia actively participated in Wiki Loves Africa, contributing to the larger initiative. This edition of the competition in Zambia encouraged photographers to capture and share images that highlighted the country's cultural and natural beauty. Participants were encouraged to upload their photographs to Wikimedia Commons, with a specific focus on topics related to the theme of the year. The theme for Wiki Loves Africa 2019 was "Play!" This meant that participants aimed to showcase the diverse ways in which Africans play, whether through traditional games, sports, music, or other cultural activities. This event allowed Zambian photographers to contribute to the documentation of their nation's cultural heritage.
In 2020, Zambia continued its involvement in Wiki Loves Africa. The competition adapted to the challenging circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic by encouraging participants to focus on the theme "Health and Wellness." This theme was particularly relevant in a year when global health was a top priority. Zambian photographers captured images that depicted various aspects of health and wellness in their country, showcasing practices, traditions, and healthcare activities that contribute to well-being. The photographs from this edition were again uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, contributing to the growing collection of images that illustrate and educate about Africa.
2021, 2022, and 2023
[edit]In the years 2021, 2022, and 2023, Wikimedia Community Zambia did not organize Wiki Loves Africa events within the country. Various factors may have played a role in the absence of these events. Nevertheless, it is essential to emphasize that Wiki Loves Africa is an ongoing competition with a global focus, extending beyond individual countries. Even in the absence of local events, contributors from Zambia and other participating nations continued to actively participate in the competition, acknowledging its international reach and the significance of their contributions to the broader community.
2024
[edit]The Wiki Loves Africa event is set to return to Zambia in 2024, with the theme "Africa Create." This marks a significant revival of the competition in Zambia, providing an opportunity for Zambian photographers and contributors to participate in the event, capturing and sharing images that illustrate the theme and contributing to the Wikimedia Commons repository.
