Commons:WikiProject GeoSets/Guidelines
WikiProject GeoSets Guidelines provide detailed instructions for uploading, categorizing, and managing aerial image sets. Following these guidelines ensures consistency, enhances discoverability, and maintains the quality of our archive.
Filename standards
[edit]Adhering to standardized filenames helps in organizing and locating images efficiently.
- Format: WPGS YYYYMMDD Description uniquefilename.jpg
* Example: WPGS 20230615 NewYork CentralPark DSC0023.jpg
- Components:
* Location: Include the specific area or landmark name. * Date: Use the YYYYMMDD format to indicate the date the photo was taken. * Description: Provide a brief description of the content or notable feature.
Metadata standards
[edit]Feel free to strip personal metadata from the EXIF if you'd like, but including some features is crucial for the utility of the images.
- EXIF Metadata:
* Date and Time: Ensure the capture date and time are accurate. * GPS Coordinates: Latitude, longitude and altitude (AGL or ASL) for geotagging. * Camera Information: Model, lens, and settings used.
Categorization
[edit]Proper categorization aids in the systematic organization of images. A specific category should be created for each image set and each photograph should be tagged with that category. Other categories are welcome but not necessary.
- Essential category:
* Category:WPGS - Name (e.g., WPGS - Central Park in New York, June 2023)
- Optional categories:
* Category:Aerial photographs by country * Category:Aerial photographs by year * Specific geographic features (e.g., Category:Mountains of Country) * Landmarks (e.g., Category:Central Park) * Environmental conditions (e.g., Category:Drought in Country) * Specific categories according to each individual image's content
Licensing
[edit]Ensure all uploaded images comply with Commons licensing policies.
- Special Considerations:
* Always make sure to follow local rules and regulations regarding UAV flying and photography sharing, including copyright rules.
