Commons:Tracking external file usage
When files from Commons are used on most Wikimedia wikis, records of that usage appear both on file pages (under "File usage on other wikis") and on Special:GlobalUsage. Note that doesn't include usage through the ProofreadPage extension at Wikisource. Usage at Wiktionary may be incomplete, as Wiktionary has case-sensitive first characters and lowercase uses are not listed.
However files that are used on other projects outside of Wikimedia wikis are not intrinsically labelled in any way by the MediaWiki software.
To make uses on other projects more visible, Usage Bot maintains galleries containing files used on certain other projects. Those galleries then appear on file pages under "File usage on Commons" alongside other uses on Commons. At the moment, the following projects are covered:
- Various MediaWiki instances run by Wikimedia movement affiliates outside of Wikimedia infrastructure (those on Wikimedia infrastructure being covered by Special:GlobalUsage):

- Commons:Files used by Wikimedia Australia for wmau:
- Commons:Files used by Wikimedia Czech Republic for wmcz_old:

- Commons:Files used by Wikimedia UK for wmuk:
- Commons:Files used on ÖsterreichWiki for oewiki:, which is a regional project subject all of Austria from wmat:

- Commons:Files used on OpenStreetMap covers files referenced by the
image=*
andwikimedia_commons=*
keys in OpenStreetMap. - Commons:Files used on the OpenStreetMap Wiki covers the OpenStreetMap Wiki, which documents OpenStreetMap.
- Commons:Files used on the AARoads Wiki covers the AARoads Wiki.
Other uses of files on Commons could be found by searching for the file title or the URL or the author name (who usually should be credited) or by the use of image reverse searching (Tineye and Google Images).
