Welcome to Told Cities photography contest, organized by Heritage Watch Ethiopia and Wiki World Heritage! Theme: UNESCO World Heritage cities! UNESCO World Heritage cities are rich mosaics composed of buildings, streets, people and cultural practices. However, these diverse components are often under-documented on Wikimedia projects. In Ethiopia, the Harar Jugol was inscribed by UNESCO in 2006. The aim of this contest is to document all the tangible and intangible components of these cities. Photos can range from general views of the sites to specific details, architectural elements, and human activity within the site. [ Know more about Harar Jugol! ] The historic walled city of Harar is located in the eastern part of Ethiopia, 525 km from Addis Ababa, the capital, on a plateau cut by deep gorges and surrounded by desert and savannah. The protective walls surrounding this sacred city, considered the "fourth holy city" of Islam, were built between the 13th and 16th centuries. Five historical gates corresponded to the main roads leading to the city and divided it into five districts. However, this division no longer has a practical function today. The Harar Gate, from which five streets lead towards the centre, is recently constructed. Calendar and prizes The contest runs from 1.12.22 to 31.12.2022 The first prize is a voucher of 150 USD and the second prize is a voucher of 100 USD. Eligibility This contest is open to everyone who wants to participate, there are no restrictions in terms of the number of photos uploaded by person, or the date when they have been taken. All photos should be taken by the participant, and should clearly respond to the theme of the contest How to participate ? Prepare your photos !
