Commons:Requests and votes/Tintazul
I've been contributing to Commons for two years, with 900 pics and 3,000 edits (see edit count results.) I agree to all that's expected of an admin; yet I don't expect to replace many hours of my current content creation with admin work. I see there are only three admins fluent in Portuguese; I would be #4.
I plan to fight vandalism better; participate in discussions; delete items for speedy deletion; inform new users; while at the same time gaining an even better understanding of how MediaWiki works.
The main motivation for my requesting adminship right now (note: I meant to have asked for adminship long ago, so what I mean is what is making me ask for it in this particular moment in time) is that an organisation whose site I administer is considering swapping its content management system for a wiki, and MediaWiki is one of the candidates. Being an admin would allow me a better glimpse of MediaWiki from an admin's perspective. – Tintazul talk 10:54, 20 March 2007 (UTC)

{{contra}}He have requested adminship also on pt.wikipedia (currently 0 supporting, 12 against and 4 abstentions). He is a good user but their intention is only to use the Wikimedia wikis as a sandbox. Lugusto • ※ 00:26, 21 March 2007 (UTC)- Currently 10 supporting, 15 against and 2 abstentions, quite a turnaround in 24 hours - yet I still expect to lose ;-) – Tintazul talk 11:22, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- Lugusto, that's not fair. I don't need a sandbox, check out the quality of my edits! The motivation for asking for adminship now is wanting to administer Wiki Commons, because soon I'll be installing and administering another wiki! I could have asked for adminship long ago; I have more edits than most of the Portuguese-speaking admins. – Tintazul talk 10:08, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- Changing to Neutral. Your RfA at pt.wp is a quite confusing... well... my ISP isn't helping me to try to head the entire discussion for now and Commons are in need for more portuguese native speakers helping in the maintenance tasks. Anyway I don't have said "you are a poor user, let's go to search for a private sandbox" but you saying uma organização cujo site administro está a considerar substituir o seu sistema de gestão de conteúdos por uma wiki; ou no mínimo manter uma wiki para proje(c)tos internos. Pretendo saber como funciona o sistema MediaWiki "por dentro" de forma a ter uma opinião melhor formada sobre o assunto. [1] isn't something helpful to request adminship simultaneously at two large Wikimedia projects. You have rewritten your statement but now I are in need to read it more closely and to see the reactions at Portuguese Wikipedia. You know that some users are in pt.wikipedia only to play in RfA pages and you know what I and a large amount of ptwikipedians believes on it... Lugusto • ※ 16:51, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
Opposeper 555 - install a MediaWiki on a wiki farm or something. Don't use live Wikimedia sites as your test toys. pfctdayelise (说什么?) 04:30, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- That's not it, pfctdayelise - see above. – Tintazul talk 10:08, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- Neutral - you may make a great admin, Tintazul, but you somewhat sabotaged this attempt. If you want to be an admin here because you like the project and want to further contribute, then no problem. but that's not how you represented yourself, even if it is also true. PS: if you want to be an admin on my test wiki, email me and it will be done. :) --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 01:36, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- Neutral Candidate already have solid contribution to Commons: images and categorization; and definitely could be trusted. However I agree with pfctdayelise that local server is much better place for experiments. --EugeneZelenko 14:19, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- Support - good colaboration with the wiki, and why not give him the ability to learn how to use the tools, for educational purpose, why not give him access to something that is open source. Glum 01:06, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose - I don't have confidence in this user as an admin. Should I vote for you because A Rocha is considering using MediaWiki, and because you somewhat unspecifically "fight vandalism better; participate in discussions; delete items for speedy deletion; inform new users; while at the same time gaining an even better understanding of how MediaWiki works" -- when at least two of the things don't require admin tools? Soliciting votes for his candidacy is also something probably frowned upon most places, so he probably lacks experience. / Fred Chess 08:45, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
- Neutral - I think you could be trusted with the admin tools, however you do seem not to have much experience in the maintenance fields. I see that you have recently started contributing to the deletion debates. If you keep to be be involved with this, and maybe contribute to to licensing talk, or helping others users out etc., I think you will be a great admins in a few months. Just not now yet. -- Bryan (talk to me) 11:52, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- Oppose pending addressing the issues with the selection process raised here. --South Philly 12:57, 23 March 2007 (UTC)
- I think opposing or voting neutral on all current candidacies, because you have issues, may not be a good approach to getting those issues understood and addressed. Why take it out on the candidates? Myself, I may not be completely clear on what your concerns are... could you recap them (there)? And please reconsider making a point by opposing. We don't have an exact analog to WP:POINT but it's still not a good idea. ++Lar: t/c 05:20, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- I second Lar's concern and suggest that you withdraw from the !vote if you are unwilling to consider Tintazul's contributions and potential as an administrator. --Iamunknown 04:13, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Support based on my further consideration of this users wanting to help. ++Lar: t/c 05:23, 24 March 2007 (UTC)
- Support User is experienced, wants to help, has a good track record, what's the problem? --Iamunknown 04:16, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
- Support As far as I understood, more Portuguese speaking admins are needed. I hope he will concentrate on problematic uploads by users who have restricted ability to communicate in English. --Franz Xaver 21:13, 25 March 2007 (UTC)
Questions
- Could you comment further on what sorts of things you would see yourself doing that you are not now doing, were you to be made an admin? There is merit in helping out with things here as a way to learn more, to be sure, but it concerns me if it is your only motivation or main motivation. I take it you are not an admin on any pt wiki at this time? Thanks for any information you can share. ++Lar: t/c 15:43, 20 March 2007 (UTC)
- Certainly, Lar. Fight vandalism better (I suppose admins have better tools?); participate in admin issues; delete items for speedy deletion; and so on, and so on. What does an admin do? I will do that.
- Please don't confuse my motivation for asking for adminship today with my motivation for adminship in general; I have wanted to ask for it for a long time, but now something happened that made me come to a decision. And if I do say so myself, an environmental organisation active in 16 countries around the world is considering MediaWiki because of me. That should count a lot in my favour.
- About not beign an admin in other wikis... well, I will be if you let me, right? At least, give me the benefit of doubt, being an admin is nothing special, and if I don't do admin work then, well, demote me. That's the way it works, right? – Tintazul talk 10:08, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
- I confess I am somewhat concerned that someone wishes to be an admin not knowing what the tools are? I don't see admin as anything special but I do see it as being for those who "need" in some sense of the word and that implies knowing what they will get? --Herby talk thyme 16:04, 21 March 2007 (UTC)
My final words on this
I thought the project "needed" me, not that I had to "need" adminship. As to my need, well, if I hadn't mentioned it, I would probably be a Commons admin by now. We live and die by the words of our mouth, and I didn't explain myself correctly the first time. Much like a waiter saying "Madam, here's your delicious soup in a bowl which had a little speck of dust in it." It may well be just a little dust, but who will want the soup now?
Also, I deliberately avoided any tactics, which of course is bad tactics. I could have approached Commons admins who know my work and asked (via private e-mail): "do you think I would be a good admin?" My chances would be tenfold. Instead, I read the requirements for adminship, and thought: "I am that" - so why not propose myself? Now I know why not. I may make a great admin? That's what I thought, but Commons will probably never know. It's OK.
I don't know about the tools. "Just four more buttons," someone told me - and yet, I'm not getting those four buttons. "Being an admin is not important" - but apparently, it's not for me either. So much for the benefit of the doubt. "You don't need admin tools to do admin job" - I know, I've been recategorising, marking bad pics, voting for deletion, etc. without the admin tools; but I have to ask, what exactly are the admin tools for?
Fred: how could I be more specific? Name specific vandals? Indicate the discussions I am willing to participate in? Name the bad pictures I am going to speedy delete or nominate for deletion?
pfctdayelise: Thanks for your offer of adminship on your test wiki... I mean it. But I have my own boxen (Lin and Win, soon Mac too) where I can install MediaWiki and test as much as I want. I don't want to play at being an admin, I actually want to do the job of an admin. Hence the request for adminship here. I want to learn how to be an admin and I want to help Commons better. I see that won't be possible; it's all right.
This are my final words on my request for adminship. No hard feelings towards anyone. Keep up the adminning, and I'll keep up the uploading. Be well – Tintazul talk 11:22, 22 March 2007 (UTC)
