Commons:Requests and votes/Durin
Durin is a long term contributor to various WikiMedia projects. He has a deep and abiding respect and understanding for copyright issues. He has been deeply involved in implementing WMF policy on non free images on en, as well as being a reasoned and thoughtful (although sometimes controversial) contributor to policy discussions there.
Review his contributions and you will see a lot of work being done already to benefit commons... retagging, clarifying descriptions, noting deletions elsewhere, bringing images here that should be hosted here, and the like, as well as helping set up the processes and mechanisms we use (for example he created the template for the administrators' noticeboard sections, which became Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Template, and helped flesh out some of the sections themselves).
To see some of the other image work he's done, you should look at w:User:Durin/Removal_of_fair_use_images... Durin has done thousands upon thousands of fair use abuse removals on en.wikipedia. While this is not work directly on commons it is very relevant. Also see User:Durin-en/Deleted images (note that Durin was user:Durin-en at first and usurped Durin) and especially note the first part; the work to converse with Transport Québec, and the discussion thereof; User:Durin-en/Text to Government Québec.
While I sometimes disagree with Durin on some things, and I recognise he may not be our most active admin if confirmed, I believe that Durin will be a strong addition to the admin ranks here and urge that he be given the sysop bit. ++Lar: t/c 14:07, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
- Nomination accepted. In being an admin here, I would work to reduce backlogs that frequently arise here. I'm often dismayed at the long list of images awaiting deletion, for example at Category:Copyright violation. Images that I've personally tagged for deletion often sit for days before action is taken on them. I'm thoroughly committed to free content, and have been working hard to reduce the amount of non-free content on en.wikipedia. As Lar noted, I've conducted thousands of fair use abuse removals over there. Of late, I've found myself querying admins on the commons IRC channel to delete a given image due to copyright violations. Having the admin bit here would eliminate that step for me. I grant that I am not the most active editor here. One person commented to me the other day that I lacked sufficient experience to be an admin here. If my work both here and elsewhere is insufficient to demonstrate my understanding of copyright and commitment to free media, then it will never be. --Durin 14:22, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

- Support. I have worked with this user for some time now, and I have full confidence in this user's ability to act as an admin on Commons. Durin will be an asset to the Commons project. Cary Bass demandez 14:31, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

- Support, he strongly supports the aims of Commons and interacts well with other users. But please add Babel boxes to your user or user talk page. --pfctdayelise (说什么?) 02:31, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- A long time ago, I used to have babel boxes on en.wikipedia. I removed them for the simple reason that for the entire time I had them, not one person ever communicated with me in any respect regarding my (limited) abilities with French. My only real language is English. I recognize the culture at Commons and Meta are a bit different on this. But, babel boxes are a bit too close to userboxes for my comfort. --Durin 13:49, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- If you don't like userboxes, you might add something on your talk page like "My main language is English, and I can read French, but am not able to respond in it." This will make clear to users how to address you. -- Bryan (talk to me) 18:58, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- Good suggestion. Done, though I didn't add the French part. I can read it to an extent, but need help too often. --Durin 19:16, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

- Support I've seen Durin around at en. He shows a thorough understanding of copyright policy, and has done fantastic work in trying, courteously, to clean up violations. ElinorD 04:54, 3 May 2007 (UTC)
- Support I confess that I'm not a great fan of everything Durin qua admin does an en.wiki, and we certainly disagree about the extent to which we ought on en. to use non-free content, but our disagreements are almost entirely policy-based and revolve neither around his actions and capabilities nor around issues as those one confronts here, and I have no doubt that Commons would benefit from his being sysopped. - I voluntarily stepped down from being an admin on en.wikipedia ~2 months ago (just a point of information). --Durin 13:49, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

- Support I definitely trust Durin's knowledge of policy and suspecting abuse would be ridiculous. James086 14:08, 3 May 2007 (UTC)

- Support. While I frequently disagree with his opinions on en.wikipedia, I've never seen Durin abuse the tools there, and I doubt he'd do so here. I think he would be useful as an admin on commons. ···日本穣Talk to Nihonjoe 06:27, 6 May 2007 (UTC)
