Useful Firefox Add-On – Nicer Media Pages

Hi Everybody,

I just wanted to inform you about a great Firefox add-on of mine called "Nicer Media Pages" which could come in real handy for all Wikigraphists.

Besides polishing the overall look of media pages (image/video files shown in the browser) the probably most valuable feature is the ability to show transparency in images – live in your browser:

  • By default a pure white background is used for all images (in contrast to the ugly grainy grayish background used in recent Firefox versions).
  • As soon as you hover over the image, the background is however replaced by a nice checkerboard style pattern (similar to the one we're used to from Wikipedia file description pages) allowing you to see and inspect transparency in images.

The best part is that this does not only work for PNG/GIF files but also for SVG files! The result for an SVG file is shown in the image to the right.

Since I'm the developer of the add-on (using an alias) you can direct all comments, bug reports, feature requests, etc. directly to me. All feedback is highly welcome (I hope you appreciate the add-on as I do )!

Quality and filetype issues

Hello, I'm uploading Adolphe Millot illustrations for Nouveau Larousse illustré but now I'm worried that should I donwload the jpg2000 from archives.org, convert it to tiff then upload again. This would improve the image and file size or that really will not be so noticeable at all? I don't know jp2 enough to say if convert it to tiff will do.Dianakc (talk) 02:28, 30 September 2014 (UTC)

If the .JP2 file is lossless, then I would convert it to PNG. If the .JP2 file is lossy, then I'm not sure that there is any really good option... AnonMoos (talk) 23:44, 1 October 2014 (UTC)
Thanks, I donwloaded the jp2 just to found out that is somewhat lossy, I was unable to get the file any more larger that the already available in archive.org. Dianakc (talk) 05:40, 7 October 2014 (UTC)

Misrendered PNG from SVG

Hi!

I've tried making an illustration of streaking (microbiology) in .svg using Inkscape. The only problem is that the .png-renderer renders a black square in the middle of the illustration, where my text is. Then a saw a discussion futher down this page regarding roughly the same matter, and that it could be solved by changing the font to a supported font. Now I've tried multiple fonts (first Arial, then sans-serif, then DejaVu sans), but I still can't get rid of the black square... And the file history just gets longer and longer...

I don't know if I'm asking at the right place (or if it would have been more appropriate to write this in the discussion further down the page), but this is my first SVG illustration (and first my contribution to Commons), and I need a little push in the right direction ;-) How do I solve the issue?

Hi Lucarpedia and thanks for your contribution. You're experiencing a very common issue when creating images in inkscape, see Help:SVG#Flowed Text bug. Simply put, Inkscape uses a non-standard functionality which is not supported by the SVG renderer used on Wikipedia which unfortunatetly shows a black rectangle instead. I fixed the issue for you so you can directly compare the two files to see what I changed. --Patrick87 (talk) 17:37, 15 October 2014 (UTC)

Seeking advice of how Commons graphists may be able to assist English Wikisource

The English Wikisourcers do a really great job of transcribing old works, though we are not so great (skilled?, interested?) at processing/dealing with the images that are within some of these works. So this results in a backlog of graphic images that have been identified that need to be processed (cropped, cleaned, metadata'd, brought to Commons). The recent review of metadata has identified that we probably have about 10 000 files where we have extracted best available quality images from the scanned works, poked them on enWS as files and now available to be processed. I am wondering whether there is an interest from the Commons side to assist with the processing and migrating of these images to Commons.

As a little more background, Wikisource primarily is working on pre 1923 publications, so these images will predominantly be in the public domain (a few minor exceptions). If you would like to see the sort of issues of which I am talking, we have marked works in our Page: namespace with the template s:en:Template:raw image (and they align with a File:namenamename.djvu which will be stored here at Commons.)

If this is of interest to Commons graphists, then, how can enWS organise things to make this a valuable project for both parties?  — billinghurst sDrewth 00:07, 22 October 2014 (UTC)

Femmes lauréates du Nobel.png.svg

Hello, I have several question concerning a "conversion" of an image from png to svg (I do not contribute so much to Commons that's why I am a kind of beginner here...). I created Femmes lauréates du Nobel.png.svg that is the vectorized version of Femmes lauréates du Nobel.png.

  1. I used UploadWizard to upload the file here. I mentionned that I am the author of the image but at the origine, it is an original work by Girona7 (Female_nobel_laureates.png) that Euterpia translated into French (Femmes lauréates du Nobel.png). How should I say that because bascially I just did a derivated work? That's why I choose the CC-by-sa licence as Girno7 and Euterpia. Must I do other thing about the licence?

  3. As for the orginal image in PNG, how should I mention the files above in the Femmes lauréates du Nobel.png.svg description page?
  4. Is there an easy way to translate the text of the SVG file using Mediawiki? The idea is to created a SVG file of Female_nobel_laureates.png.
  5. Probably I should improve the quality of the SVG file. In particular, I think I should find icons more coloured. If you have any remark or comment on the file and how to improve it, please let me know.
