Commons:Flickypedia/Community engagement
Community engagement
There are a couple of different ways to engage here, via the Discussion page or participating in our survey (until August 11th), or reviewing the presentation George gave to the Commons Photographers’ User Group on Saturday, August 5, 2023. (That meeting was recorded.)
We were very happy to be at the GLAM Wiki Conference, in November. Here are the slides from our session.
29 Nov - Hi - stay tuned for our soft launch in December. We'll look forward to your testing and feedback!
Survey summaries
[edit]We've been reading over the results from the survey, thanks so much to people who completed it. Here are some initial summaries of responses that are specifically about Flickr2Commons (F2C) and where it could go. Jessamyn (talk) 14:50, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
Pros of F2C
[edit]- Open Source
- Brings over metadata
- Ease of Use
- “It just works”
- Fast
- Works in bulk
- Partnership between Flickr and Wikimedia Commons is ideologically pleasing
- Duplicate checking
- Category add individually or as a batch
- Album import
- Built into Upload Wizard
Negatives of F2C
[edit]- Auth not working, hard to troubleshoot
- Tool sort of buried and feels “techie”
- CC licenses need updating
- Only transfers safe images
- Lack of Category addition
- Lack of documentation
- If a Flickr license changes, does not change on WC
- Confusing interface
- Lack of community conversations between Flickr/WC
- Duplicate checker doesn’t always work
- Hard to add categories
- Slow on bulk uploads
- Tags don’t align with categories
- 500 Image upload limit is too low, no way to batch in groups of 500
- Lack of structured data
- Flickrwashing
Potential improvements?
[edit]- Plugin for Lightroom or Apple Photos
- Add categories from within the tool (maybe using tags?)
- Nicer UI
- Documentation
- AI image recognition
- Incorporate QuickCategories (a tool to mass process category changes on Commons), QuickStatements (also by Magnus Manske) and AC/DC
- Autosave functionality
Confusions?
[edit]- More info on who maintains it. Why is it useful and important. How will this help me, the photographer?
- How to rename/categorize
- Relationship of Flickr (.com and/or FF) to Wikimedia Foundation

Feature requests
[edit]Here are the feature requests we’ve heard so far:
For Flickr2Commons
- A way to avoid License Laundering or “Flickr Washing”
- A way to blacklist bad actors
- A way to manage or block duplicates (Prevent Flickr2Commons from uploading duplicate files) - done!
For Flickypedia
- As above, plus...
- Clearer IDs of Flickr Foundation staff in wiki space - done!
For Flickr.com
- Updating CC 2.0 licenses to CC 4.0
- Wikimedia projects recently made this transition
- Uploader that makes it clearer how to choose a Wikimedia-friendly license
