U2 concert photos by SukkoPera
[edit]These are photos taken by User:SukkoPera from the U2 PopMart tour concert in Reggio Emilia on Sep 20, 1997. I think the images listed below are all derivatives of non-free works. I originally came across File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-BonoEdge.jpg in an unrelated discussion and spotted the rest while looking at the uploader's contribs.
- File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-Voucher.jpg
- Scan of a ticket voucher. I don't think this looks quite simple enough to be {{PD-ineligible}}, although it does come close.
- File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-Arch.jpg
- File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-Stage.jpg
- File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-Lemon01.jpg
- File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-Lemon-WithoutCover.jpg
- File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-OpenLemon.jpg
- Photos of artistic stage props. Italy has no freedom of panorama, and even if it did, these were not permanently installed.
- File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-BonoEdge.jpg
- File:U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-TheConcertBegins.jpg
- File:-U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-Miami.jpg
- Photos of concert screens. We've deleted such photos before as derivative works.

- These photos don't in any way limit U2's ability to market itself or sell tickets, since the PopMart Tour has long since completed. Many aspects of a concert stage feature "utilitarian aspects", since it is used for sound and video projection. In the case of the PopMart stage, the orange "basket" that hangs above the stage is the speaker stack, and the purple screen (which is blank/unlit in several photos) is used to display video. In some of the shots, the screen is displaying images, but one is too zoomed in to make out what the content is and another is simply a magnification of the band's likenesses. I hardly see the case to delete every single one of these photos. Y2kcrazyjoker4 (talk) 13:12, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- The only one that actually concerns me is the one taken during "Miami" as it does contain pieces of what i think are copyrighted art on the screen. By the time of the concert in Mexico that song was not in the set list and thus there are is no mention of the artist and applicable copyright in the end credits on the DVD en:PopMart: Live from Mexico City. The image of The Edge and Bono on screen is a live feed from one of the cameras filming the concert to supply content for the screen. As i understand it COM:FOP applies to permanent structures, which this concert stage is not, and the uploader is the photographer and is properly licensing his copyright of the photographs. These images form the majority of images for all related articles in all languages. As there is no way to replace them with new images, unless someone has a working time travel machine, moving the images to local projects where they are used and could be licensed under a fair use claim, as applicable, would be preferable to outright removal from all WMF projects, should the decision be to remove them from Commons. delirious & lost ☯ ~hugs~ 22:02, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- In many countries, freedom of panorama indeed only applies to permanent structures. This does not, however, make non-permanent contemporary artistic structures free — it makes them unfree. In any case, Italian copyright law doesn't have FoP — I only mentioned it in my nomination because it is often used to justify keeping similar images of permanently installed artwork from other countries. —Ilmari Karonen (talk) 23:01, 6 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, this is the uploader. I am sorry that this problem arose with my pictures. Unfortunately I am not that familiar with copyright laws, but if there is anything I can do to avoid deletion, please let me know. BTW, it seems that one of my pictures (U2-LiveInReggioEmilia-19970920-Ticket.jpg) has already been deleted. It was a scan of the concert ticket. Is this deletion documented somewhere? Kept the ticket voucher as ineligible for copyright; Deleted the rest. Stifle (talk) 11:20, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
