the subspecific name "krugeri" is outdated, subsumed to "melanochaita" BhagyaMani (talk) 22:14, 19 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, a gallery is emptied without convincing rationale and then submitted for deletion without giving any proof for the claim that the taxon is outdated. A taxon which has still articles at Wikispecies and numerous Wikipedias like, for example, es:Panthera leo krugeri or it:Panthera leo krugeri, all coming with references. --AFBorchert (talk) 06:16, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

See the wiki article Lion#Subspecies and reference therein: lion taxonomy was revised in 2017, and krugeri subsumed to melanochaita. -- BhagyaMani (talk) 20:14, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I wonder why you started with filing a DR for a Commons gallery whereas Transvaal lion (Q2118614) with numerous associated Wikipedia articles and a Wikispecies entry still exist. It is important that Wikipedia articles are updated but a gallery shouldn't be an urgent problem – as it is not an article. You could still keep a gallery with pictures of lions once considered as panthera leo krugeri – perhaps with a small note that the taxon has been obsoleted. --AFBorchert (talk) 20:26, 20 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
There is no meaning in keeping this gallery in this name if related category is converted to a redirect. But instead of deleting, this page can be moved to Panthera leo melanochaita. Jee 01:30, 21 June 2018 (UTC)[reply]
As with other populations of lions that were recognized as subspecies, before being reclassified as either Panthera leo melanochaita or Panthera leo leo, such as Panthera leo massaica (for lions in East Africa) and Panthera leo azandica (for lions in Virunga National Park), what I have done is to recategorize those as subcategories of either Category:Panthera leo leo or Category:Panthera leo melanochaita. For example, I reclassified photos of Category:Panthera leo senegalensis to Category:Lions of West Africa, and turned that into a subcategory of Category:Panthera leo leo, rather than keeping all these photos directly under Category:Panthera leo leo, for reasons like avoiding confusion about what is or what is not a Barbary lion. Just because West African lions (formerly Panthera leo senegalensis) have been reclassified as Panthera leo leo does not mean that they should be treated as Barbary lions, for example.
