JSF Images

[edit]

This is essentially a nom to delete a set of copyright violating images related to the US Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) that are currently mis-tagged as PD-US-Gov.

The JSF website (http://www.jsf.mil/) says on it's terms and conditions page [1] that:

The Joint Strike Fighter Program Office website is a United States Government/Department of Defense website. Images, text, graphics, moving images and illustrations on this website are original and are designed/developed by the Joint Strike Fighter Program Office. Other images on this website are obtained from companies that include the Boeing Company, the Lockheed Martin Corporation, United Technologies Corporation's Pratt & Whitney Division ("Pratt & Whitney"), and the General Electric Company. Further information regarding image usage is available from each company's respective web sites.

The problem however is that they do a poor job of identifying which images belong to Boeing, Lockheed Martin, etc. Two dozen images credited to these organizations have apparently been uploaded by mistake as US government images.

The reason this was overlooked is because the image credit apparently appears only in the IMG alt text in the HTML code of their thumbnail galleries. This is visible either by looking at the HTML source, or on IE by hovering over the image.

For example, Image:F135.jpg comes from [2] where the alt text says: "Pratt & Whitney F135 STOVL Test Engine FX643 Undergoing testing in West Palm Beach, FL. Photo courtesy of Pratt & Whitney." (Emphasis mine).

Hence since it was not taken by a US government employee the current PD license is incorrect.

The following images on Commons appear to suffer this problem (broken down by source gallery):

Note: There are about a dozen additional images on Commons sourced to jsf.mil that as far as I can tell may legitimately be works of the US Gov. However someone else might want to investigate further. Dragons flight (talk) 20:41, 11 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
