The reason these should all be deleted is that the licensing used on their description pages is highly dubious. All of the images base their PD claim on the fact that the author died more than 50 years ago; however, not a single image gives the name of the photographer, let alone his death date. Moreover, the Free Art license used in the first three images is inappropriate. Finally, the claim that the uploader (Raafat) is the author of the Sobhy.jpg image is highly dubious: Gorgi Sobhi died in 1964, so it is extremely unlikely the uploader was the one who took this photograph. - Keep Yesterday you had changed {{PD-Egypt}}, without discussion it seems. I restored the template. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 07:28, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Dear Pieter, please do not mix two very different issues. The controversy over the deprecation of PD-Egypt (which I am going to address later on at the template's talk page) has nothing to do here. In fact, even if we were to accept PD-Egypt in its current version, the images should still be deleted, since there is no explanation whatsoever on their description pages as to why PD-Egypt is being used: no author's death date, no date of publication, no date of creation. Moreover, the fact that following this deletion request the uploader suddenly replaced PD-Egypt-author with the GNU Free Documentation License (not to mention the inexplicable use of the Free Art License) shows that he does not take licensing too seriously: the author was previously dead more than 50 years ago, and now all of a sudden he turns out to be living and releases the image under a free license?
- But it is the same issue. Until yesterday, {{PD-Egypt}} said that simple photographs only enjoyed a 15 year term of protection. These photos look older. I did not check, but probably in all of them the subject is an Egyptian that died at least 15 years ago, so that details do not really matter. The uploader never said that the author had been dead for more than 50 years. That is just what you made him say, by your change of the template, something you failed to mention when making the deletion request. /Pieter Kuiper (talk) 15:17, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Dear Pieter, PD-Egypt is really not the issue here. Even if we were to accept it as a reliable template, its use is not justified on these images. Did you actually look into greater detail at what the template said? It said that simple photographs enjoy only a 15-year term of protection starting from the date of publication (not simply creation!). The fact that the persons depicted died more than 15 years ago does not imply anything about the images' copyright status. Using the "simple photographs" argument of the PD-Egypt tag without providing a verifiable publication date renders the tag totally worthless. If the images are not proven to have been published before, then they may still be copyrightable, regardless of their age.
- The uploader has now released the Bishara Wakim image under the GNU license, and the Gorgi Sobhi image into the public domain, which would imply that he is either the original photographer or one of his heirs. I am willing to assume good faith and believe this, although I honestly doubt it. Wakim died in 1949 and Sobhi in 1964, so it is very unlikely that the uploader is indeed the copyright holder of these images. Again, this is not in any way a personal attack, but simply enforcement of Commons policy. I'm really sorry if the name of the deletion request sounded offensive; this was never my intention: I simply named it this way based on the naming conventions contained in the guideline for mass deletion requests. Regards. --BomBom (talk) 23:45, 24 March 2009 (UTC)

- As for Raafat, you assert on this deletion request's talk page that the Sobhy image was taken from your website and that you gave permission for its use. However, you have no right whatsoever to authorize the use of this photograph, unless you happen to be the original photographer who took it or one of his heirs. Sobhy died in 1964, so do you really mean to tell us that you are the one who took this image or are related to the original photographer? I am willing to give you the benefit of the doubt, and if this is the case, then please state who the original photographer was and how you are related to him. And please don't take this as a personal attack. I appreciate your work, but we must ensure that Commons is free of copyright violations. Best regards. --BomBom (talk) 13:26, 23 March 2009 (UTC)
- Keep very ancient images
- Keep .....Old image captured from one of his old movie
Deleted. The GFDL-licence of the first image, yeah sure. For the others, they may or may not be PD-Egypt, there is no proof for it. But considering the history of the uploader and probability that they are not is higher then the other way round. There is enough doubt to delete them until proof of PD is brought forward.
