Commons:Deletion requests/Flags of active autonomist and secessionist movements
Full of unsourced, inactive and ficticious movements, pan-nationalisms and nationalisms of dubious reality with no existing separatist movements. Subject to repeated vandalism and addition of actual sovereign states (e.g. Austria) or historic states (e.g. Nazi Germany, USSR). This gallery therefore has no educational worth. More accurate information can be found on Wikipedia where there is at least some sourcing requirements. - In addition, many – if not most – of the entries have links to non-existing articles of the type "Xxx independentism". --TU-nor (talk) 08:54, 27 December 2022 (UTC)
- Hi,
- As a university student, I will also admit that I have biases (yes, “confirmation biases” are inevitable, but some are more “ethical” than others.
- I am a South Australian secessionist, and I am well aware of Indigenous Australians, and I collect and make/redesign flags as a hobby.
- Personally, I believe that we are currently living in World War III (not to sound alarmist, or anything, heh), and *censorship* is the biggest threat to humanity in my opinion, second to “nuclear war” (read: I have stopped living in paranoia and fear, of any and all consequences).
- However, as someone on the autism spectrum, I am interested in hundreds of hobbies, I am a drama student first and foremost, heh. I *voluntarily* make edits to Wikipedia in my almost-limitless spare time, but I have ZERO TOLERANCE for CENSORSHIP, which I consider *article deletion* to be.
- I support *almost* every human rights cause in the world.
- Slava Ukraini 🇺🇦
- - Love from South Australia 🇲🇩 (My state’s colours are the same as Romania, and the bird is a Piping Shrike, made famous by the AFL football team Adelaide Crows.) Centralismo (talk) 03:18, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- I respectly disagree.
- Personally, I have to admit that I harbour various sympathies for *almost* every separatist group on Earth, with the blatantly *most obvious exception* of “secessionist entities” in Ukraine.
- I will try to not be polemical, however, I take the position of “defensive democracy”, which is the doctrine of the Federal Republic of Germany after the Nazi regime was defeated after WWII.
- However, I am getting the feeling that anyone who wants articles on secessionist (and yes, this is my hobby, heh.) “DELETED” (read; potential censorship; Wikipedia is an open-source Encyclopaedia and not a space to take down articles one disagrees with.) is *HIGHLY BIASED* against one or more separatist movements.
- I aspire to be a police officer one day, potential prosecutor and judge, and well, potentially a politician, maybe a President of one of these “separatist states” if I’m lucky.
- I vote “NO”, which means “YES” to keep.

- Strong Keep, but lock to prevent vandalism. 109.70.214.139 10:18, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
This is not a free speech issue. Wikicommons has an educational purpose and, therefore, misinformation has no place here. Anyone is free to make up separatist movements and design flags somewhere else, but for something to be an active movement it requires an existence in the real world and to consist of more than one person. Perhaps deletion of this gallery is going too far but in its current state it is very broken. Thankfully Wikipedia already has articles on active autonomist and secessionist movements by continent. These are not perfect but are at least sourced and regularly monitored by conscientious users. Unless this gallery is vastly improved with correct and properly sourced information then it would be no great loss if it were deleted. Xophe84 (talk) 14:54, 23 January 2023 (UTC)
- I'm not really a Wikipedia editor. I found my way to this page by chance and did find it fascinating. But if there's already a collection of more reputable and well managed secessionist movements by continent, wouldn't it make sense to just make this page into an aggregation page for those articles? Or is it really just that nobody has bothered taking ownership of this article? 2601:5C0:C280:7BE0:D10:E474:3903:F5D3 23:48, 31 January 2023 (UTC)
- Delete, per Commons:Project scope/Pages, galleries and categories galleries should be "educationally useful". This page is not useful: it is a magnet for vandalism, full of poor links, and at its core isn't that useful an intersection educationally (flags teach little about autonomy or secession). As it stands, it is more likely to misinform than to inform. Chipmunkdavis (talk) 06:08, 7 February 2023 (UTC)
- Delete, it is out of scope and a platform for fringe-of-fringe politics. Constantine ✍ 16:42, 10 March 2023 (UTC)
- Maybe we could just clean this page up with reliable sources and then protect the page (I don’t think semi-protection would work) 98.213.225.105 19:08, 23 April 2023 (UTC)
