This deletion discussion is now closed. Please do not make any edits to this archive. You can read the deletion policy or ask a question at the Village pump. If the circumstances surrounding this file have changed in a notable manner, you may re-nominate this file or ask for it to be undeleted.

All of these files meet three criteria:
1) File has chemistry errors (tagged with template {{Disputed chem}})
2) File is unused (except a few cases where they appear on non-mainspace maintenance pages)
3) There is a suitable replacement file (has template {{Vector version available}})
Clearly files that meet these criteria are unneeded. It is best to remove these files to prevent them from being accidentally used by Wikipedia editors (or other off-site users searching for chemistry images) that don't realize that they have been identified as having chemistry errors.

Since the last nomination, many more files of this type have accumulated.

All of these files meet three criteria:
1) The file has chemistry errors (it is tagged with template {{Disputed chem}})
2) The file is unused (except some cases where they appear on non-mainspace maintenance pages, old user sandboxes, etc.)
3) There is a suitable replacement (the file has template {{Vector version available}})
Clearly files that meet these criteria are unneeded. It is best to remove these files to prevent them from being accidentally used by Wikipedia editors (or other off-site users searching for chemistry images) that don't realize that they have been identified as having chemistry errors.

  • Where the SVG version is a derived work, we must ensure correct attribution, which often is via the original work. Here most SVGs seem to be independent works, is that correct use of the SVG version template? Anyway, "what links here" need to be checked to avoid breaking attributions. –LPfi (talk) 21:00, 30 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
    • Spot-checking, I have found none that are actually protectible content, but instead are simple facts of nature represented in a fairly mechanical way and should be tagged {{Pd-chem}}. @LPfi: you said "most SVGs seem to be independent works", emphasis mine; have you found any that are actually DW? DMacks (talk) 00:01, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
      • No, I haven't. I just think that the "has SVG version" template should be used for more or less identical versions, that for more complicated schemas would imply derived work. –LPfi (talk) 06:23, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
  • I’m not an expert in chem stuff I just moved a file from en.wiki and got a notice. File:Threonine wpmp.png is marked as disputed but there is no arguments why as far as I can tell. Also the disputed tag was added by nomination and the edit summary is something like removed category x, added category y, using HotCat. So if someone monitor the file they have no chance to see that someone dispute the file.
I would prefer that at least 2 users confirm that the file is incorrect before we delete and I think it is hard in this case where there is a mass dr.
Also should an svg is available not only be used if the svg is the same as the original? And if the original is incorrect then the svg is incorrect too? --MGA73 (talk) 14:52, 31 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
For the file File:Threonine wpmp.png, the {{Disputed chem}} template gives the reason as "Ambiguous stereochemistry". This comment applies to the image because, according to internationally accepted guidelines for drawing chemical compounds, "stereobonds between stereocenters should be avoided at all costs" because of their ambiguity. By contrast, File:L-Threonin - L-Threonine.svg for example is drawn correctly and is helpfully listed in the {{Vector version available}} template as an alternative that can be used in place of the incorrect one. I'm taking no position on the properness of the SVG-available tagging. Seems like that would merit a more centralized discussion rather than a niche-topic DR. But I think it's irrelevant to this DR also, since all it did was lead the nominator to uncover a bunch of files that are each problematic. DMacks (talk) 02:06, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I like your suggestion for Ölsäuremethylester.svg, so I have renamed the file, changed its description to match the depicted chemical structure, and withdrawn it from this deletion discussion. Marbletan (talk) 18:30, 1 June 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted: per discussion, i.e. all except of the renamed chemical structure. --Leyo 16:50, 5 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
