- Keep I took this photo with my own camera. I'm not an expert on this derivative work thing or copyright law, but from my understanding you think I need permission from whoever built that structure? Here's a source I found [1] (seems to be a credible source written by an attorney) it says that as long as the building or architectural work is in public view the photographer holds the copyright of the image. I took this photo from a public road (a road funded by the United States government); therefore, I exclusively hold the copyright and can do whatever I want with the image.
