Tagged as speedy "Marking as possible copyvio because The license plate design is too complex to be considered a simple design. A similar file, File:KKK-3249.jpg, was deleted for the same reason. This image is also most likely doctored rather than being a genuine license plate." by User:Epicgenius. The referenced other file was tagged and deleted without discussion. As this file was listed for deletion and kept previously I thought a listing with discussion was in order. Delete See history of NY plates. The two crucial dates under US copyright law are 1978 and 1989. All license plates first used prior to 1978 are all PD, assuming they don't have a copyright notice. Those first used prior to 1989 are very likely also PD, but in addition to lack of notice they must not have been registered for copyright (so a check needs to be performed). Specifically for NY, pre-1986 is just PD-text, while anything pre-2000 is likely OK but needs to be checked out. After 2000 is not OK. -- King of ♥ ♦ ♣ ♠ 03:15, 14 August 2021 (UTC)
