Copyrighted U. S. license plates
[edit]This is a mass deletion request to all U. S. license plates which are copyrighted in my opinion and not either PD as official works of states publishing their license plates as PD or PD as they don't meet the thresold of originality.

[edit]- File:Colorado - Commercial Fleet.jpg I am a bit unsure with this one, but IMHO the mountains are above the threshold of originality.

Photos with license plates of different states
[edit]
Copyrighted license plates of California, Florida, Massachusetts and Washington, D.C. have not been listed here as they have been published as PD by the states (DC's plates are PD by the Federal Government). Also, there's a lot of license plates being PD but having a CC-BY-SA/CC-BY/... tag, they have to be relicensed to PD.

Voting starts here
[edit]- 14 dispositions for 102 plates! I've given a description of each one below, so we know what it is if it ends up moved or deleted. The ones that I vote Move on on should be moved to en.wikipedia.org as fair use, because most of them are in use and likely to pass as fair use there, and many of them are rare types (official vehicle, special, trailer) that would be hard to find again if they were deleted instead of moved.
- Move for backgrounds/middles unique enough to pass threshold of originality and not de minimis:
- (AZ) File:AZDisabled.JPG, File:AZDisabled2.JPG, File:Arizona license plate 2008 series.jpg — teal/white/yellow with purple cactus and mountains at the bottom
- (ID) File:2000 Idaho License Plate.jpg — red/white/blue "Secnic Idaho" plate with dark blue pine trees and light blue mountains
- (IL) File:2001 Illinois License Plate.jpg, File:Il2005btruck.jpg — Lincoln head background
- (IA) File:IADisabled.JPG, File:Iowa 2003 Trailer 4744 KL.jpg — grey farm drawing on blank white cityscape
- (KS) File:KS 2002.jpg — the Kansas Statehouse with a blue sky, with a yellow wheat stalks at the bottom left
- (KS) File:KS 1995.jpg — blue/white/yellow fade with yellow stalks of wheat in the center, and "KANSAS" in normal Clarendon blue lettering at the top
- (KS) File:KS 1989.jpg — white plate with tan stalks of wheat in the middle, a yellow stripe at the top with "KANSAS" in an unusual typeface in blue, and a triple stripe in blue on both sides of "KANSAS" also
- (KY) File:2005 Kentucky License Plate.jpg — "The Bluegrass State"/"KENTUCKY"/"It's that friendly." at the top; big sun with a smiley face in the lower middle; blue/red background with green treeline at the bottom
- (MI) File:Michigan Great Lakes Splendor License Plate.JPG — blue/orange/blue/white background, orange sun in the middle, shining through a grey bridge and reflecting off water; "MICHIGAN" at top in white on blue background; "Great Lakes Splendor" in blue at bottom on white background
- (NV) File:Nevada 1998 876HXZ.jpg — grey mountainous background with a ram on the top left, and desert plants on the right; "NEVADA" and "THE SILVER STATE" and plate number in dark blue
- (NH) File:2000 New Hampshire License Plate.jpg, File:New Hampshire license plate.jpg, File:USA licenceplate New Hampshire.JPG — 1999-and-after photorealistic green/grey background of Cannon Mountain with its Old Man of the Mountain positioned in the middle, and blue sky on the right; "LIVE FREE OR DIE" in green at the top; "New HAMPSHIRE" in green in script and decorative serif typeface at the bottom; numbers in green in the middle
- (OH) File:OH 2010.jpg — 2010-2012 Frances Strickland series, blue sky at top, with script "Beautiful", "Ohio", "Birthplace of Aviation" in blue with a Wright Brothers style plane in the upper right corner; the silhouette of a green tree, and sun rays on the right, over a farm field with a barn at the bottom; a cityscape silhouette behind rolling green hills on the bottom left; blue plate numbers in a (3M, I think) typeface
- (OH) File:OH 2004.jpg — 2004-2010 series, red/white pinstripe/blue pinstripe at top, red pinstripe/white pinstripe/blue at bottom; at top, "Ohio" in script and "Birthplace of Aviation" in flowing serif block letters; plate number embossed in dark blue on white with a grey illustration of the sun and low-lying hills in the background; no words on bottom, just places for stickers
- (OH) File:Oshkosh.png — same as above, but with flat (3M style) blue sans-serif plate lettering for a vanity plate
- (OK) File:2006 Oklahoma License Plate.jpg — white plate, Osage battle shield in the middle between green plate numbers; "OKLAHOMA" at top in black and "NATIVE AMERICA" at bottom in red, in tall, serif letters
- (PA) File:PA-Flagship-Niagara-Governor.jpg — limited-time 1996 "Flagship Niagara" plate with a very complex painting of the USS Niagara of 1813: as far as I know, an original recent painting, not an old painting
- (SC) File:South Carolina 1994 ADJ 630.jpg — 1991–1998 the "wren" license plate, white background with the brown-and-yellow bird in the middle near the top, sitting on a yellow-flowered plant of some kind; black plate numbers; "SOUTH CAROLINA" in brown script at the bottom; this one appears to be the later painted-on wren version instead of the wren decal
- (SC) File:South Carolina In God We Trust License Plate.JPG — light blue/white plate, yellow "IN GOD WE TRUST" along the top, black letters, U.S. and South Carolina flags on a tan pole
- (SD) File:South Dakota 2000 1A07581.jpg — (off-)white plate, with tan stylized Mount Rushmore "logo" on the background, with the curve on the bottom of the logo but no separate stripe; red script "South Dakota", green plate numbers with the background showing through, and "Great Faces. Great Places." in the same green at the bottom; "South Dakota" in red script and blue outline over (mostly) the blue sky background; dark blue plate numbers; "Great Places. Great Faces." in red at the bottom
- (TN) File:Tennessee 2010 592-LSK.jpg — green hills background with blue (water?) stripe mixed near on the left; "Tennessee" in black script with shadow and "The Volunteer State" in dark green Deja Vu Bold typeface at top; black flat-plate numbers; black-on-white "Shelby" county stripe sticker at the bottom; rectangle at bottom left with Class Code 1000, Issue Year 2006, and serial number; rectangle at bottom right with words "WHEEL TAX DECAL"
- (TN) File:Tennessee 1996 SAM PLE.jpg — white plate, "BicenTENNial" at the top in red/blue/red and "1796 1996" in blue next to that, red plate numbers with simple blue illustration of the Tennessee State Capitol in blue in the middle, and county stripe sticker, white on blue. There are versions of this plate (short plate numbers with no spaces) that have no image in the middle, but they're a very small minority of regular Tennessee plates. I haven't found a pre-1989 copy of this statehouse drawing on Google Image Search or TinEye, even after cropping the image down to that.
- (TX) File:2005 Texas License Plate.jpg — blue/white/dark blue plate, blue top background with stars, Space Shuttle on the left, moon on the right, "TEXAS" in red in the middle; dark blue plate numbers; lone-star flag inside Texas shape (probably uncopyrightable) in the middle space; dark blue silhouette of Texas landscape with desert plants, cowboy on a horse, and oil towers at the bottom, with "THE LONE STAR STATE" in white
- (TX) File:2009 Texas License Plate.jpg — photograph background with blue/white sky for most and blue/black hills at the bottom; scribble blue/red background on upper left with white star on top and "TEXAS" in white at top middle; black flat-plate digits; "The Lone Star State" in a well-known script font in white at the bottom
- (UT) File:Utskielevated.jpg — brown petroglyph background at top with stylized "UTAH" in white; blue-and-white skiing photo of Heidi Voelker as main background, with plate letters in dark blue, "LIFE ELEVATED" above, and "GREATEST SNOW ON EARTH" below.
- (UT) File:UtahLifeElevatedArch plate.JPG — blue/white/brown/orange background with the Delicate Arch center-right; dark blue plate letters; "LIFE ELEVATED" in dark blue at the bottom
- (UT) File:UtahCentennialArchplate.JPG — similar to later File:UtahLifeElevatedArch plate.JPG, but with plain blue "UTAH" and "1896 CENTENNIAL 1996" at the bottom.
- Move for custom-drawn art on the left:
- (CT) File:Connecticut Caring For Pets Sample License Plate.jpg — blue/light blue/green with dog and cat drawing on left
- (GA) File:Georgia Give Wildlife a Chance 98.jpg — white plate with bird flying past a thin tree
- (GA) File:GA Wildlife 2003.jpg — flying bird (shown twice) and deer on a tan prairie
- (ID) File:IDWildlifeElk.JPG — elk on a blue/peach sky, white mountains, green land at the bottom
- (ME) File:USA licenseplate Maine.JPG — white plate, small bird (sparrow?) on a pine branch with a pinecone, "MAINE" at the top, "Vacationland" in italics on a green pine treeline background at the bottom
- (MD) File:Maryland Treasure the Chesapeake Sample License Plate.jpg — full-color plate, blue to white fade background, white heron(?) with black markings in front of green marsh grass on the left; crab on sand on the lower right; "Treasure the Chesapeake" in blue italic sans-serif typeface at the bottom
- (MI) File:Michigan Centennial Licence Plate 1996.JPG — "American Automobile Centennial" shield on the left in red/white/blue (likely copyrighted); old car in pale yellow with red outline in background (probably not copyrightable); blue license numbers; white "MICHIGAN" on blue background at top; "WORLD'S MOTOR CAPITAL" at the bottom
- (NM) File:New Mexico 2011 KAY015.jpg, File:NM 2000.jpg — blue/yellow/orange background, a yellow/orange/red hot-air baloon with the New Mexico logo on it on the left, and red plate letters; "Land of Enchantment" and "NEW MEXICO USA" in yellow at the bottom
- (OK) File:2010 Oklahoma License Plate.jpg — white plate; photograph of Allan Houser's statue "Sacred Rain Arrow" on blue sky at left; "OKLAHOMA" in dark blue/black with yellow border at top; "Native America" and Osage battle shield silhouette in white on blue stripe at bottom
- (UT) multiple white plates, "Utah" in red italic letters at the top, blue plate numbers shifted right, and various decal images (at left) and phrases (at bottom). I haven't been able to prove any of them to be pre-1989:
- File:UtWildlife.JPG — left is elk with word "ELK"; bottom is "ASSURING WILDLIFE'S FUTURE"; April 1991 expiration sticker
- File:UtVintageVehicle.JPG — left is more-or-less silhouette drawing of a very old car; bottom is "VINTAGE VEHICLE"; "Mo. Yr." where expiration stickers would go
- File:UTTrout.JPG — left is turquoise-colored trout jumping out of blue water with words "CUTTHROAT TROUT" underneath; bottom is "ASSURING WILDLIFE'S FUTURE"; lots of expiration stickers piled on top of each other, latest 2013
- File:UtNMHPets.JPG — left is dog and cat under a roof; bottom is "No More Homeless Pets"; "Mo. Yr." where expiration stickers would go
- File:UtahWildlifeNewer.JPG, File:UTElk.JPG — left is apparently an elk from the back side (why?!); bottom is "ENSURING WILDLIFE'S FUTURE"; April 2014 expiration sticker
- Move for custom-drawn art at the top:
- (KY) File:2011 Kentucky License Plate.jpg — "Kentucky" italic logo with horse drawing, "BLUEGRASS STATE", and "UNBRIDLED SPIRIT" at the top; white/blue background fade with shape of Kentucky in the center blank space
- (NE) File:Nebraska 1991 1-D6756.jpg — the "windmill" plate: white plate with black digits; blue sky and brown rolling field at top, black windmill on the top left, and "Nebraska" in unique script in black across the top. World License Plates calls this the "1989 base" but other sites say it started issuing in 1990, and I can't find an expiration sticker earlier than February 1991.
- Move for art at the bottom probably enough to pass threshold of originality and probably not de minimis:
- (ND) File:North Dakota 1992 DAK 367.jpg — 1993–present plate, blue/white background with "Discover the Spirit" at the top, plate numbers in black, "NORTH CAROLINA" in white on a black outline at the bottom, and "PEACE GARDEN STATE" in brown below that; bottom background is grey mountains in simple silhouette above a yellow field with a bison on the bottom left and a couple pieces of wheat on the bottom right
- (SD) File:South Dakota 2006 67L 726.jpg, File:South Dakota 2003 4AA 656.jpg — red/white/blue plate with stylized Mount Rushmore "logo" with flowing stripe and copyright symbol under it, in the middle of a ragged mountain-like blue bottom silhouette
- Weak Move because the arrangement and choice of phrases might exceed the threshold of originality:
- (OH) File:Ohio license plate 2013.jpg: "OHIO" in white, with the shape of Ohio in the O, on a red triangle at the top; white background with grey word cloud in various weights of all-capital letters; dark blue embossed plate letters (at least on this sample with the plate "OHIO"); red pinstripe border. The grey word cloud has "THE BUCKEYE STATE" (the state nickname) and "THE HEART OF IT ALL" (old motto on 1990s plates) in the upper left and right corners, "BIRTHPLACE OF AVIATION" (old motto on 2000s plates) just above the plate number, and "DISCOVEROHIO.COM" at the bottom center
- Weak Move under the Commons:Precautionary principle because the background might be copyrighted:
- (SD) File:South Dakota 2008 2KW 954.jpg — The only copyrightable part is the background, which might be a U.S. federal photograph, or might not exceed the Commons:Threshold of originality for photographs because nearly all of the "standard" views of Mount Rushmore are from the same public staging area, allowing a range of maybe 10° of angle and a choice of time of day and choice of month for shadows. But I don't have proof of either, so COM:PRP. This plate's background is a plain blue sky with the photograph of Mount Rushmore, cropped along the top of the mountain underneath.
- Delete without moving because they're unlikely to get fair use on English Wikipedia, since there are already fair-use examples of the plate:
- (NY) File:Ferrari P45 plate.jpg, File:USA licenseplate New York.JPG — 2001–2010 series passenger plates on vehicles; plate is white with blue numbers, blue top and bottom, Niagara Falls drawn at the top left, mountains with "NEW YORK" in white at the top middle, and a skyline with (impossibly?) the Empire State Building in front at the top right; a New York State shape acts as a hyphen between digits
- (OH) File:USA licenseplate Ohio.JPG — same plate style as File:OH 2004.jpg, on a vehicle
- (TX) File:Embracing texas-hood.jpg — same plate type as File:2005 Texas License Plate.jpg but on a Volkswagen vehicle, photographed from higher to show the hologram/watermark in the middle space
- Keep as {{PD-US-no notice}}:
- (HI) File:Hawaii 1976 565-895.jpg — background of king or warrior standing and volcano/palm tree scene
- (WY) File:Trash Bar Old Licence Plate Collection - Flickr - The Eyes Of New York (34).jpg, File:Wyoming 1983 11 751AS.jpg, File:Trash Bar Old Licence Plate Collection - Flickr - The Eyes Of New York (20).jpg — 1970s plates with embossed cowboy/bucking horse; 1983 plate with painted silhouette clearly designed to be the same shape
- Keep as highly-probable {{PD-US-1978-89}}, as I've never seen a copyright notice or registration for any plate of this era:
- (HI) File:Hawaii 1981 DTB 326.jpg — king's head or warrior's head background in space between digits
- (IL) File:Illinois 1987 Govr Conf 77.jpg — rare, grey event plate with white plate number "77" on left, "Midwest Governor's Conference" in red, "Jo Daviess County" and "September 13–16, 1987" in white, and a very tall, skinny drawing of Abraham Lincoln holding his hat with his right hand and his lapel with the left hand
- (ME) File:Maine 1987 2Z51 VJ.jpg — white plate with a flat orange illustration of a lobster in the middle, "MAINE" at the top and "Vacationland" at the bottom, both in wide, red block letters
- (MN) File:Minnesota 1982 EIW 800.jpg, File:Minnesota 1995 787-HDD.jpg, File:Minnesota 1997 209-KQF.jpg — pale blue lake/sky at top with green treeline and green canoe and "Minnesota" in blue typeface; "10,000 lakes" at bottom in same typeface; blue license numbers; 1990s plates have an embossed Minnesota shape between numbers, but the background is just a darker print of the pre-1989 scenery with a slight typeface change
- (NY) File:New York 1986 License Plate.jpg — 1986–2001 series plate, white with a basic illustration of the Statue of Liberty in the middle in red, red stripes at the top and bottom, and "NEW YORK" and plate numbers in blue
- (NC) File:Balloonduck.png, File:North Carolina 1999 DXT-4752.jpg — "First in Flight" in red with Wright Brothers plane in blue at top, "NORTH CAROLINA" in red with marsh grass in blue at bottom, and blue numbers. Proof of pre-1989 publication: zz-nc87.jpg (plate BRX-2591) and nc88.jpg (plate BTF-5059) via http://www.automobilelicenseplatestore.com/product-category/n/north-carolina/
- (UT) File:Utah Trailer plate.JPG, File:2001SkiUtahLicense plate.jpg, File:Ski Utah License Plate.JPG — white plate, blue drawing of a skier at the top, with "Ski" in blue script, "Utah!" in red italics, and "GREATEST SNOW ON EARTH" at the bottom in blue. Same drawing in use on Utah license plates since 1985.
- (WA) File:Washington 1988 269-ARJ.jpg, File:Washington 1998 522-SEP.jpg — only possibly-copyrightable part is mountain background, in use on plates since 1987
- (WI) File:1986 Wisconsin License Plate.jpg, File:1997 Wisconsin License Plate.jpg, File:2007 Wisconsin License Plate.jpg, File:WI 1987.jpg, File:Wisconsin license plate edited.jpg, File:Wisconsin license plate edited.jpg, File:Wisconsin license plate.jpg — well-known Wisconsin sailboat/sunset+woods+barn top plates first issued July 1986; slightly modified in June 2000 but not enough to meet threshold of originality.
- Keep as only uncopyrighted elements arranged in a way that does not meet the threshold of originality:
- (KS) File:Kansas Sample Plate.jpg — grey background (actually more blue in real life), with the top half of the Great Seal of Kansas (current form pre-1978, similar forms pre-1923) offset to the bottom right in the background, "KANSAS" in a normal serif typeface at the top
- Keep because the state has released the photograph under a free license:
- (OR) File:License plates (10728525246).jpg — "License plates: Oregon license plate styles" licensed {{CC-BY-2.0}} on the Oregon Department of Transportation's official Flickr account: photograph of 4 plates, the center one of which is the "Douglas fir tree" plate issued since 1989 with these colors (and since July 1988 with different colors, so also {{PD-US-1978-89}}), and the lower of which is the 1998–present "salmon" plate with "SL" prefix
- Weak Keep because it's de minimis:
- (TX) File:Newtexasplate.jpg: same plate type as File:2009 Texas License Plate.jpg, but with almost all the copyrightable parts covered up by a license plate holder. Not a great photo: It's so blurry that the photograph only meets COM:SCOPE because, ironically enough, the better photographs of that plate are ineligible for Commons.
- File:License plates (5110908127).jpg — a group of 42 various license plates of different states, lying on asphalt: plates are a little blurred when at full size; probably no particular copyrightable work is enough to be the focus here
- Delist and split out to separate nominations for each state:
- (CO) File:Colorado - Commercial Fleet.jpg — This file has the same mountain snow-shading as File:2003 Colorado License Plate.jpg, File:Colorado 2008 796-OXV.jpg, and File:Colorado 2011 944-UXD.jpg. We probably want a single nomination to deal with that specifically. There might be a precedent for this plate style, but I can't find it yet. (Commons:Deletion requests/File:Colorado MKV-229.jpg resulted in a deletion, but I can't figure out if that was with the mountain snow shading or not.)
- (GA) File:Georgia County Government 98.jpg, File:Georgia 2005 3343 ALG.jpg, File:Georgia 1999 840 BSS.jpg, File:Georgia 1998 75181 QE.jpg, File:Georgia license plate 1996 series.jpg, File:GA RRX 397.jpg — The only copyrightable element is the peach, which started issuing right around the 1989 U.S. copyright cutoff. So it might be {{PD-US-1978-89}}, and if it's not, some of these with the numbers over the top of the peach may be de minimis and some may not be. We probably want separate nomination(s) to deal specifically with this peach.
- (NV) File:2001 Nevada Sample License Plate.jpg, File:2010 Nevada License Plate.jpg, File:NV Plates.jpg, File:NV Sample License Plate.jpg, File:NV SAMPLE Flat License Plates.jpg — blue fade plates with white snowcaps and yellow fade sky at the top: the mountain/snowcap lines are very simplistic, and might be {{PD-shape}}/{{PD-textlogo}}. We probably want a separate nomination to deal with this plate style.
- Delist as already deleted by Commons:Deletion requests/Files uploaded by Lemongrass Gogulope:
- (KS) File:Kansas 1994 License Plate.jpg — same style as File:KS 1989.jpg above
- (NJ) File:NJ 1995 AF.jpg — yellow/white "Animal Friendly" plate with drawing of a black-and-white dog and tan cat with green eyes in a rectangle on the right, and black paw prints in the lower right corner
- (NJ) File:NJ 2001 AF.jpg — yellow/white/green "Animal Friendly" plate with Earl and Mooch from the comic strip Mutts on the left next to a bird in a tree, and Shtinky Puddin' (Jules) at the lower right
- Move for backgrounds/middles unique enough to pass threshold of originality and not de minimis:
I do fully agree except for File:Newtexasplate.jpg and File:License plates (5110908127).jpg, I think those should also be deleted as in the first one the license plate is not de minimi because the license plate is the main part of the image and the second one shows a lot of copyrighted license plates, they make up together >50% of the image, even if every license plate alone is very small. -- Milad A380 talk? 21:58, 2 January 2015 (UTC)
Comment Only two users commented on the case but the page is already unreadable / incomprehensible and unlikely to be base for a reasonable decision. This should end in a procedural keep and files should be renominated in smaller batches / single cases if appropriate. --Krd 23:54, 12 January 2015 (UTC)
- Of course it will take some time to read this, but I think that it is not unreadable, and that an admin can easily decide what to keep and what to delete with Closeapple and my comment above, so I don't think this DR should be split. -- Milad A380 talk? 17:56, 15 January 2015 (UTC)
- Procedural keep: Too many images on a single nomination. Ellin Beltz (talk) 16:44, 19 January 2015 (UTC)
