Completing an old incomplete DR. --JuTa 19:39, 14 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This category was first nominated for speedy deletion because all its content had been migrated to Category:Aviation museums in the United States. I am listing this as a regular deletion to contest this on the following grounds:

  1. This is an appropriate subcategory, concentrating the two categories Aviation museums in the United States and Museums in California.
  2. Migrating the relevant museum subcategories out of this one and into Aviation museums in the United States is creating category diffusion and is an example of over-categorization, which is to be avoided per Commons guidelines. The migrations actually took a few of the relevant museum subcategories out of Museums in California.

I am in favor of keeping the category and migrating all relevant museum subcategories that were migrated out of it back into it. BrokenSphere (Talk) 17:04, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I nominated this category, together with Aviation museums in Alabama, because only two such subcategories existed, out of all states, and they were not fully populated with individual museums. Users attempting to find known museums won't necessarily know which state each one is in. For consistency, in the category Aviation museums in the United States, surely all museums should be in State sub-categories, or none of them. I have elected for the latter, until such time as the number of museums becomes difficult to manage. In this case, I believe that retaining the little-used state categories constitutes over-categorization. I apologize if the subject aviation museums were inadvertantly lost from Museums in California.PeterWD (talk) 17:51, 2 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
There is nothing stopping someone from looking at specific state categories to find out if a specific museum they are looking for isn't in the parent Aviation museums in the US - this situation happens across much larger categories. By your logic, because I don't see someone immediately in Category:Baseball players from the United States that I am looking for since they are pretty much all within specific state categories and I have to drill down into the states, then it would be helpful for all the specific player categories to be taken out of the state ones and put into the parent Baseball players from the US. As I mentioned, this is a very specific category and the general rule is to "always place an image in the most specific categories, and not in the levels above those", which was happening before, but now isn't - this is going against the category guidelines. Now the California museums have to be put into 2 categories which were previously covered by 1 - this is over-categorizing. If there were 10 aviation museums in Los Angeles, then it would be totally appropriate to create the subcategory Aviation museums in Los Angeles. Otherwise now you have to put something into Aviation museums in the US and Museums in LA, which could be covered by 1 category. I don't see why it is necessary to have all the specific museum categories in state subcategories, or none at all, or why waiting until the parent category gets more diffuse would be necessary - 49 subcategories is already a decent amount that can be organized more effectively. 10 of the museums that I counted are in California, Alabama has a few, and even Florida and Texas could use subcategories themselves. If something doesn't exist (e.g. Aviation museums in Oregon), then this could be created so that all the relevant states are covered, or if something is in the Aviation museums in the US category that actually can fit into a state that does exist, then it can be moved into the relevant state.
