Remove Watermills from Water wheels. This was done based on a CfD which received no objections which I closed a few days ago. Attempting to implement this, I noted some complications, and JopkeB also helpfully raised some concerns about the change. Looking into it, I think we should simply back off from adding Water wheels as a parent of Watermills and potentially discuss a more appropriate structure for these. - @JopkeB and Andy Dingley: (pinging other participants) Josh (talk) 21:48, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
- I agree that Whater wheels should not be a parent of Watermills. Now Category:Water wheels is a parent as well as a grandchild of Category:Watermills:
- Water wheels
- Watermills
- Watermill parts
- Water wheels
- Watermill parts
- Watermills
- Water wheels
- That cannot be correct.
- Solutions might be:
- to rename the water wheels that are not part of a watermill (something like "Stand alone water wheels")
and/or the other way around: use Category:Scoop wheels for the water wheels that are part of a watermill.
- Perhaps you know other solutions. JopkeB (talk) 05:11, 4 December 2023 (UTC)
@Joshbaumgartner: Could you look into this discussion again? --JopkeB (talk) 03:51, 9 April 2024 (UTC)
- @Joshbaumgartner: This discussion is still open. Could you please give a reaction? What solution do you favour? JopkeB (talk) 04:49, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- @JopkeB I think that given that Andy Dingley (talk · contribs) has not had any comment here, it is safe to start with simply vacating the original CfD result to start. As for the solution going forward, it seems to me that there are water wheels which are part of a mill, and those that are not. This would to me indicate that Category:Water wheels should cover both, with a sub-cat for water wheels that serve a mill (Category:Water wheels of mills, Category:Water mill wheels, or some-such). I don't know enough to say whether all scoop wheels serve mills and/or all mill wheels are scoop wheels, so I can't say whether Category:Scoop wheels would serve this purpose. I'm not a big fan of categories defined by what they are not, so I don't know if we need a catch-all 'non-mill' wheel category. Presumably, there are other purposes for a water wheel than just driving a mill, so other sub-cats can be made for each of these non-mill roles if there are contents to support them. Josh (talk) 19:07, 22 July 2024 (UTC)
- @Joshbaumgartner: I think you are right that scoop wheels are not the same as water wheels: scoop wheels are for pumping water, usually used for land drainage, not for generating energy. So that indeed is not a solution. My proposal:
- Category:Water wheels - remove Category:Watermill parts as a parent and keep the other ones
- Category:Water mill wheels, which has also Category:Watermill parts as a parent
- Category:Scoop wheels - stays as it is, but remove Category:Windmill parts as a parent (because not all scoop wheels are powered by wind, other possibilities: electricity and other types of energy).
- Category:Water wheels - remove Category:Watermill parts as a parent and keep the other ones
- Then the only thing left is Water wheels for other purposes than serving a water mill or just pumping water. So when we see those other purposes we can create categories with "Water wheels" and the purpose in the category name. Do you and @HenkvD: (who created Category:Scoop wheels) agree? --JopkeB (talk) 06:28, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- Thanks for pinging me. I was not aware of this discussion. My proposal
- "Water mill wheels" does not seem a proper name to me.
- Category:Water wheels with Category:Watermill parts as a parent. Add text "See also Category:Scoop wheels for wheels to pump water".
- Category:Scoop wheels - stays as it is. Add text "See also {Category:Water wheels for wheels that convert flowing or falling water into energy". Whether or not to remove Category:Windmill parts as a parent is a seperate point.
- Remove Watermills from Water wheels.
- HenkvD (talk) 10:00, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
- And what to do with water wheels that are not part of a watermill? What should the category name be if "Water mill wheels" is not a proper name? JopkeB (talk) 15:51, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Summary
[edit]Combined proposal:
- Category:Water wheels - remove Category:Watermill parts as a parent and keep the other ones - this category is for all types of water wheels: of watermills as well as of scoop wheels; (so contrary to the proposal of HenkvD I kept Category:Scoop wheels as a subctegory of Category:Water wheels)
- Create Category:Water wheels of watermills, with Category:Watermill parts as one of the parents
- Category:Scoop wheels - stays as it is, but remove Category:Windmill parts as a parent
- Create Category:Scoop wheels of windmills and have also Category:Windmill parts as a parent
- (Pro Memory: subcategories to be made in the future: Water wheels for other purposes than serving a water mill or just pumping water)
- Remove Water wheels as a parent from Watermills
@Joshbaumgartner and HenkvD: Do you agree that these actions are to be taken to solve this discussion? --JopkeB (talk) 14:54, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
- @JopkeB I have no problem with that. Thanks for summarizing. Josh (talk) 15:05, 25 July 2024 (UTC)
- @JopkeB and Joshbaumgartner: I agree too. OK to make the changes now. HenkvD (talk) 11:53, 26 July 2024 (UTC)

Notes | Still to do: make subcategories for Category:Water wheels of watermills, at least by country Renamed Category:Water wheels of watermills to Category:Watermill wheels because this is shorter, especially in subcategories --JopkeB (talk) 05:46, 11 August 2024 (UTC) | |||
