this cat is a redirect from Statuettes which was there for many years and is especially from art historic point of view the better cat and expressions, as figurines is defined with "statuettes" and the subcats also consist of the wording with "statuettes". I see no reason for the remove of Statues.Oursana (talk) 20:05, 7 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Acc. to En.wiki “a figurine... is a small... sculpture”, while “a statuette is a small statue”. Obviously, the more comprehensive (Cat:Figurines) can't be a subcategory of the less comprehensive (Cat:Statuettes / Cat:Statues). --Elkost (talk) 07:21, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Elkost: I'm confused. Are you reading a different en:Figurine article than I am? A figurine (a diminutive form of the word figure) or statuette is a small, three-dimensional sculpture that represents a human, deity or animal, or, in practice, a pair or small group of them. (...) The main difference between a figurine and a statue is size. And from en:Statue, a sculpture that represents persons or animals in full figure but that is small enough to lift and carry is a statuette or figurine. If we're basing our definition on the Enlighs wikipedia article, the words are wholly synonymous. - Themightyquill (talk) 09:31, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Themightyquill: Dear colleague, the comparison in “The main difference between a figurine and a statue is size.” is not correct, as “figurines” is a subset of “sculptures”, not “statues” (something like comparison between a bee and a tree). I make difference between “statuettes” and “figurines”, basing on following:
  • “small sculptures” are sculptures small enough to lift and carry;
  • “figurines” are small sculptures representing figures of humans, animals, etc.;
    • figurines may be in the form of a statue, a relief or other type;
    • other small sculptures are not figurines (not representing figures);
  • “statuettes” are small statues (a subset of both small sculptures and figurines);
    • there are statuettes which are figurines;
    • there are statuettes which are not figurines.
As per me, we need to restore Category:Statuettes. Anyway, if the community insists to consider that “statuettes” and “figurines” are synonyms, then we have to move the non-statue types from “Category:Figurines” to “Category:Small sculptures”. --Elkost (talk) 13:53, 27 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I now understand that you see "figurines" as meaning small Category:Sculptures of people. That's a coherent argument, but it doesn't seem to be backed up by dictionary or wikipedia definitions. If we're just going by our personal opinions, it definitely would not occur to me to call a small relief of a person a figurine. Such a definition would include an enormous number of the images in Category:Reliefs of people. But I agree, if we go with the definition used by the wikipedia article, non-statue types should be removed from Category:Figurines, and we might instead use Category:Statuettes which is apparently less ambiguous. Category:Figurines might be converted to a disambiguation page. - Themightyquill (talk) 21:04, 28 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
