And parent Category:Landmarks and their daughters. Is there a meaningful worldwide definition of a "landmark"? Should it stay, at all? Should it be populated? With what, precisely? Aside from a few clearly-defined national categories i.e. Category:Monuments historiques in France it's practically empty.

It's also counterintuitive. For the U.S., "landmarks" are defined as listed in Category:National Historic Landmarks of the United States, which is disctint from the NRHP. So NHRP sites are not "landmarks". It's fine for a national or state level, but it does not work for the rest of the world. --NVO (talk) 05:14, 12 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

  • Looking at some sub-categories, landmarks are defined extremely inconsistent. It seems it is left to the uploader to decide if it is a landmark. So it is a problem, it makes the term meaningless. But I'm not sure what to do with it... --P199 (talk) 16:48, 18 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
  • This definitely could use some better definition. Without it, "landmark" can mean anything that local people think is noteworthy -- a geographical feature, an especially big building, a historical site, etc. Looking under a few of the specific countries, we see, among other things:
  • Under Argentina, the general categories for observation towers and parks -- not specially designated ones, but all of the ones for the country.
  • Under India, the general categories fo gates, mountains, and visitor attractions
  • Under the Philippines, the general categories for bridges, churches, gardens, mountains, and parks.
  • Under the UK, the general category for landforms
  • Under the US, the general category for skyscrapers
In many of these categories, I see the general categories for archaeological sites and for and historic sites. I don't think these are necessarily landmarks. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:43, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I can't see any consistent way to use this category, so I'd like to propose deletion for it and all the subcategories. Achim55, is there a way to automatically tag all the sub-cats with a link to this discussion? Thanks. - Themightyquill (talk) 13:59, 2 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Themightyquill, I tagged them using AWB, sorry for my run out of memory ;) --Achim (talk) 22:25, 5 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. Thanks for your help! - Themightyquill (talk) 20:27, 6 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]
@Achim55: No further input. Can we close and delete these? - Themightyquill (talk) 18:43, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Themightyquill, I'd say we can. Best, --Achim (talk) 18:53, 6 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I propose all stuff is moved to Category:Visitor attractions by country and daughters.-- Gürbetaler (talk) 22:46, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
That's probably the best we can do, being careful not to create circular categorization since at least one visitor attraction category is underneath a landmark cat. --Auntof6 (talk) 23:30, 4 July 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've made a good start, upmerging most of the sub-categories and images to "Visitor attractions in" but there are several categories and sub-categories left. If someone wants to finish it off, I'd be grateful as I'm leaving on vacation and won't be able to finish it myself. - Themightyquill (talk) 19:22, 1 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Careful? -> Category:Visitor_attractions_in_Thailand seems more like just hacking your way out... - Takeaway (talk) 19:43, 1 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the hit-and-run job of the so-called "careful" recategorisation of what was in "Category:Landmarks in Thailand" from "Category:Visitor attractions of Thailand" to Category:Former category:Landmarks in Thailand until someone finds the time to actually carefully recategorise it as was promised here. - Takeaway (talk) 21:11, 1 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for raising your concerns, Takeaway but I don't exactly understand what upset you. I see that Category:Visitor attractions in Thailand is just a redirect to Category:Tourism in Thailand but I don't understand why that's problematic, if Category:Visitor attractions in Thailand would be a sub-category of Category:Tourism in Thailand anyway? Maybe I've missed something. Thanks. - Themightyquill (talk) 17:13, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, I see - I placed the sub-categories in a redirected category instead of in Category:Tourism in Thailand. Sorry - I was careful to avoid circular categorization, but obviously not careful enough to notice the redirect. Anyway, can we move them to Category:Tourism in Thailand and delete Category:Former category:Landmarks in Thailand ? - Themightyquill (talk) 17:17, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
If dumped straight into Tourism in Thailand, it will cause multiple issues with overcat. - Takeaway (talk) 17:40, 2 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Well, I've moved them to Category:Visitor attractions in Thailand. I can see that there might be issues with that whole category tree as well, since it's bound to be under-categorized for most countries, but it's better than using the term landmarks. Takeaway, if you want to nominate all of Category:Visitor attractions for discussion, I'd be more than happy to look for a better solution. - Themightyquill (talk) 18:15, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How would a poem (Ramakien) be a visitorvatrraction? As for this particular Thailand category, there isvway too much overlap with Tourism in Thailand and that was why it was a redirect. I have no thoughts on other Visitor actractions of... categories but please keep Visitor attractions of Thailand a redirect. - Takeaway (talk) 19:06, 3 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
How can a poem be landmark any more than a visitor attraction? I've gone through and removed all but one of the sub-categories of Category:Former category:Landmarks in Thailand since they were mostly redundant. For now, I've left Category:Doi Inthanon, the tallest mountain in Thailand, in case there's a category that acknowledges that status, but I don't think there is. It's a grandchild of Category:Mountains of Thailand, which is a sub of Category:Tourism in Thailand, so I think it can safely be removed from the landmarks "former category", which can then safely be deleted.
I disagree that there is way too much overlap with Tourism in Thailand. There are plenty of things in Category:Tourism in Thailand that are not visitor/tourist attractions (Category:Conferences in Thailand, Category:Tour guides from Thailand, Category:Passport stamps of Thailand, Category:Souvenirs of Thailand, Category:Tourists in Thailand, etc.) so there's no reason not to sub-categorize attractions into an attractions category just like other countries do, unless you disagree with that whole category in principle. - Themightyquill (talk) 08:35, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
My understanding is that we're working to empty this category so that it can be deleted. I just noticed that User:ErfgoedBot has added some new files. If my understanding is correct, do we need to contact the bot operator to ask that the bot not use this cat? --Auntof6 (talk) 17:10, 4 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that was what I was working towards. Would you mind contacting the bot owner? I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. - Themightyquill (talk) 11:42, 5 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Message left on bot talk page. I'll work on some of these as I get time. --Auntof6 (talk) 07:18, 6 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I've take care of almost all of the ones for the United States. There were just a few I'm not sure how to handle. The following categories seem to be for things officially designated as landmarks, but I can't find the official name for them to build categories:

Note that I'd already moved the category for King County before I realized that there might be an issue there. Can anyone help find the official names for the landmarks designations for these? FYI, a case similar to these is Category:California Historical Landmarks: that cat is under visitor attractions, but with it's official name. I just don't know the official names for the ones I listed above. Thanks. --Auntof6 (talk) 05:49, 13 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have finished emptying these categories and tagging them for speedy deletion. As soon as they are gone, we can close this request. --Auntof6 (talk) 01:31, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Update: the admin Hedwig in Washington requested that the emptied categories be redirected instead of deleted, so they have been redirected. I don't think all the redirect targets are ideal, so feel free to change the targets if you see fit. Since they won't be deleted, I think this request can finally be considered complete. All that remains to be done is to take the CFD template off of the categories that have it: Category:Landmarks, Category:Landmarks by country, and Category:Landmarks in Germany. I'll leave that for an admin or someone who hasn't been involved in this discussion. --Auntof6 (talk) 04:20, 3 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done: Task resolved. --Natuur12 (talk) 16:31, 6 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]
