Info Just to expand on the requested task: User:GeographBot is currently uploading tens of thousands of files without any real categorisation. Part of the cause of this is problems with localisation of the images, as this deals with this problem directly I feel a formal request is necessary. This task will at least partially resolve this, by moving files into the appropriate location category from the temporary grid square category - for instance all files in Category:Images from the Geograph British Isles project needing categories in grid SX4753 need to be placed in Category:Plymouth (or its subcategories). I will only move the files where the grid square can be tied to one specific locality.
This will also help with Special:WantedCategories, which is presently overwhelmed by the ongoing upload.
I do have one question: To enable further categorisation, by bot, the "need to check" status should be kept. Would changing {{Uncategorized-Geograph|gridref=SX4753|year=2011|month=February|day=4}} to {{Uncategorized-Geograph|year={{CURRENTYEAR|month=February|day=19}} do?--Nilfanion (talk) 22:09, 19 February 2011 (UTC)
Couldn't we just place all images in categories by grid square? -- Docu at 06:47, 20 February 2011 (UTC)- Looks ok. -- Docu at 07:03, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- If there are many images will be added to root category, it'll also not looks right to me. May be will be good idea to move them into something like Uncategorized Plymouth files? BTW, if humans can't catch up with GeographBot uploads, may be it'll be good idea to stop it for awhile? --EugeneZelenko (talk) 16:00, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- It's generally easier to sort them from the main category than from another category. DEFAULTSORT in the geograph template avoids that geograph images appear before any other images. -- Docu at 16:04, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
- Its sub-optimal to dump the files in root categories, but that's as about precise as a bot can do from geolocation-only - finer categorisation needs human input (and if they are placed there humans can do that). Bear in mind: In the case of cities (eg Plymouth) there are lots of potential files, in the case of villages such as say Category:West Alvington there's a much lower quantity, so creating a Category:Uncategorized West Alvington files seems a tad excessive. The DEFAULTSORT workaround is simpler than creating sub-cats, but either works; I'll do whatever is preferred here. As for people not being able to keep up with the uploading, we never have been able to.--Nilfanion (talk) 16:31, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Comment Done a batch of 50 - see here. In the case of these files, the category they have been placed to is both the most precise that can be determined from the grid square and the most precise category on Commons (the only sub-cats are for individual buildings). Also using the DEFAULTSORT workaround, so they merge in with the older files tagged with the {{Check categories-Geograph}}.--Nilfanion (talk) 12:23, 24 February 2011 (UTC)
